Snow board guards and pads?

My daughter is going to Snow Board in Colorado for the first time. Being that she is not real coordinated, should she really wear wrist guards, knee and elbow guards and so forth? What do you suggest for 1st timers that are kind of clumbsy? P.S. She is average build but just a little clumbsy. :)

  1. Wrist guards are probably a good idea because it's instinct to stick your hands out when you're going for a fall and those will protect her from sprains and breaking them (although that's not super super common).  A helmet is always a good idea too.

Knee pads could be useful but aren't necessary.  I've spent a lot of time falling but haven't ever thought "man I wish I had knee pads on."  Elbow pads are a bit over the top because you don't fall back onto them very often.

  2. I think you should buy her a pair of Roxy's Girl's Pinata Pants.

They are incredibly insulated and have a removable rear pad. When I was learning to ride, (before there were snowboard instructors), I was constantly falling on my rear. Falling backward is more likely to happen at first, so this is the area that needs the most protection. I agree with the others about the helmet and the lessons. The lesson is a MUST! She will be more likely to avoid injury, progress faster, and enjoy herself. I wouldn't spend the money on wrist guards or knee pads, a good pair of pants is a much better investment.

Encouragement and confidence will make it a great experience. I'm sure she will have a blast! I'm glad that there are so many girls getting into the sport!

  3. You dont need that stuff the snow will keep you safe enough! She should wear a good helmet and take a 1/2 day lesson. Maybe. Tell her to have fun!

  4. For your comment on the other question; She doesnt really need to worry about how they will look , both the knee pads and butt pads will be worn under her snow pants.  Butt pads are a lil less common, and usually when you become more advanced, you wont be using the butt pads. I would recommend the Knee pads as many advanced park riders still use kneepads.

As for the question of where to get them, Check your local REI store. I know that they had them early in the season, but i think most of them are sold out. If you live in the bay area, Check Any Mountain. If you wanted to get them online, there are plenty of sites outthere.

  5. No Wrist guards or anything, Just a helmet I would say and some resorts offer lessons so that would also be a good idea...but you don't really need pads mostly because the snow gear is pretty soft. I would say any stores like sports authority(if you have one nears your house) or any local ski/board shops.
