  1. your legs probably ache because you say your a beginner, probably meaning you like to "pizza" down the hill to slow down alot. by doing this you use your muscles much more causing them to get tired and ache. try finding powder or cutting wide but still maintaining a good speed. Just relax and skiing will be much more fun. Many more people get hurt easier if they are afraid or tense. Once you get relaxed  with what you are doing you can become a better and more confident skiier that can handle anything thrown at you.

  2. NZ or Aus?  I've had a few students this season with the similar problems.  Your legs hurt for a couple of reasons.

    1. Lack of conditioning,  run, jump rope and get in shape.

    2. Dehydration, drink water, not beer or soft drinks,

    3. Balance in your equipment.  Typical is weight is slightly back and it puts more strain on the leg muscles.

    4.  You are just past the never  skied stage in your career. Take a series of lessons,  Group lesson is more economical, but not as focused on you.  I've taught for years and I still take lessons every year.

    5. Boot fit is critical, it must be TIGHT around your foot and ankle. It should support your leg and allow precise movements to be transmitted to the ski.  If the boot is the wrong shape for your foot, you will have problems skiing.

    6.  Take some wax to rub on your skiis, if they slide properly, you can go across the hill rather than down it and go slower and in more control.

    7. Have fun, take  a pair of dancing shoes and enjoy yourself. This is a social sport as much as a snow sport.

  3. You can do some exercises before you go to improve you muscle strength and stamina, start now.  Join group lessons which should be fun even if you do fall over a lot.  I have known a number of people who have had problems learning and fallen a lot simply because their boots did not fit properly so get expert advice.  Keep warm, wear the right gear to be comfortable, have a snowman making competition!
