Snow is not copyrighted, right?

Ok,

I just want to get this clear that snow is not copyrighted! I have created a magical snow country (a country, not a world) with unique beings of which some, I have created. Some people are giving me a real hard time about saying how since Narnia had snow, I can't. But here is an idea. The snow in Narnia began melting away into summer, this snow does not and it is good snow. It stays there, the country was born like that. And the elements in the book are Fire and Ice.

I should be able to use snow, right?

What do u think?

  1. As has been said, no one can copy-write "snow," neither the word, nor the concept.  That said, it is a good idea to be careful and make your setting not too similar to one used in a popular book.  It sounds as if you have done that.  Don't belabor the difference in your book.  Just write it and make sure the world is unique to your story without worrying specifically about the snow.  If you want advice on anything in writing, find a writer or a writing group that has at least some successful writers in it.  Getting advice from friends and family is ok but some will tell you how wonderful it all is without being able to suggest things to improve it (whether they really think it's great or not) and others will tell you things that aren't an issue at all--like you can't use snow.  Good luck and keep writing.

  2. I hink you have to use dry ice nstead of real snow. Also liquid nitrogen for steam... Sorry

  3. I believe the term white crystallized precipitation is what the standard use for the word snow is in modern literature. Robert Frost copyrighted the word snow before his death in 1963.

...just kidding. The word "snow" is not copyrighted and you are free to use it as you wish. You don't even have to ask for permission from the Inuit tribes of the north pole region.

  4. It has already been clarified that "snow" cannot be copyrighted, but also know that no one can copyright an idea, so be very careful when you come up with an idea and post it on places like this. So anyone is free to use your "idea" but not your actual work.
