Question:

Snow skiing on the East Coast?

My fiance and I want to go snow skiing for our honeymoon. What would be the best place on the East Coast? We live in North Georgia, so I know there's always Boone, NC but I'd rather go a little further since I've been there before (not for skiing)

Basically we want someplace that we can rent a cabin not far from the slopes (but far enough away to be private), but also where there's something to do other than ski (Even if it's just walk around and shop)

  1. You should try some of the slopes in West Virginia! That's not quite as far as Vermont lol. Try Canaan Valley and Timberline, they're right next to eachother so you don't get bored, there's also walks, and a cross country skiing place with a great room to lounge in and have some homemade soup! CV and Timberline are wayyyyy less crowded than other resorts and the valley in a state park so it's very peaceful and quiet and there are a ton of deer!!!

    Good luck and have fun!

  2. Killington, Vermont

  3. For what you are asking I would say North Conway, NH.

I go there every year. Lots of oulets and local hills. There are condos and cabins and such everywhere to rent. It is really a "ski town"

Bretton Woods (home of Bode Miller) ,Right across from Mt. Washington http://www.skisnowboard.com/brettonwoods...

    WildCat http://www.skiwildcat.com/

    Black Mt. http://www.blackmt.com/

all located in the Mount Washington Valley

  4. Whiteface Mountain, New York.... Great place and Lake Placid is pretty romantic for a Honeymoon. You can Ski Whiteface. Go to the ice shows in the olympic arena. Lots of cool stuff in LP New York. There are lots of nice shops and lots of cabins . Its beautiful is all I can say.

  5. This would depend on how much travel you are willing to do. Mt. Tremblanc would be a great getaway but it's pretty far and pricey. I spent a week there last April and the village was fantastic. intrawest spent a billion dollars in the making of the village and it shows.

  6. For what your asking, you'll have to go up to vermont...here are some resorts that fit your criteria. All of the following you will be able to find a cabin/condo/hotel room/ no problem.

Mount Snow - most southern "big" mountain in vermont. mountain village (where the shops are) is not the biggest, but if you don't mind driving for 30-40 minutes, threre's more shopping available, from boutiques to outlets. Because of its approximate hour convenience when compared to the other vermont resorts, it gets very crowded during christmas week, martin luther king weekend, and presidents week in february.

Okemo - An hour north of mount snow. Considered the family mountain of vermont. Primarily an easy difficulty. It does have enough blues for intermediate skiers, but an expert skier would get bored easily. It does have a slightly bigger village then mount snow. But the town is more family orientated, not sure if you would mind that.

Stratan - Approximately the same distance as Okemo. It is a medium difficulty mountain, but has enough greens and blacks for the beginners and experts. Unlike Okemo, Mount Snow, and Bromley, it has a gondola. Also, because the mountain faces almost entirely north, its usually colder than other mountains in the area and gets icy quicker in the afternoon. But it also gets more snowfall usually then mount snow, okemo, and bromley.

Bromley - This mountain is approximately the same distance as Stratan and Okemo. It is primarily an easy difficulty mountain, lacking in intermiditate and expert terrain as it is designed for families in mind. Because parts of this mountian actually face south, its advertised as the sunny mountain. Don't be suprised if you get a sunburn. This mountain can get boring after 2 days for most people though.

Killington - This mountain is an hour passed Stratan, Okemo, and Bromley. It is one of the biggest mountains in vermont, covering 5 mountains. Even though you will most likely not get bored of the mountain, even after skiing for a week, the mountain is very confusing to get around. At many times, you can spend an hour and half, just trying to get to a desired trail. Again, because of its large size, it has plenty of trails for all difficulties. Its ski village is moderate size.

Because Stratan, Bromley, and Okemo are so close to each other, around 25 minutes from each other, it would be a good idea to get a cabin near one of them, and then switch off between mountains.

I know that you stated that you wanted to ski on the east coast, but from where you said you lived, you most probably have to take a plane ride, otherwise it could be up to a 3 day drive, depending on weather. And from any airport you decide to land in (in vermont), you would be looking at at least a 3 hour drive to the mountain.

Depending upon how much you would like to spend, a trip out west would definetly give you and your fiance a more enjoyable and romantic trip.

The best place to be out west is in Utah. (not even apsen can compare!)

Try looking into these mountains: Park City, The Canyons, Deer Valley,

Park City, The Canyons, and Deer Valley are 15 minutes from each other, all centered around the great town of Park City. 30 minute drive from the salt lake city airport. (Where the 2002 Winter Olympics were held.) The town and exploring the olympic village alone is enough for days. Let alone the amazing ski resorts always rated in the top 50 best ski resorts in the country for years.

  7. OKEMO

  8. As much as it pains me to say it...Why come to the northeast when you can go out west for a similar price?  If I lived in GA and had to get on a plane to go skiing, I'd go west rather than northeast.  Particulary for a honeymoon unless you're really looking for the New England experience.

I live in CT and have skied virtually every ski area from eastern NY to Maine.  While there are many great ski areas in the northeast nothing in New England beats western skiing.

I'm not saying eastern skiing is bad or that the ski areas are bad, lord (not the trail at Stowe) knows how many years I've been at it but nothing beats the powder, expanse of terrain, weather, etc.

My sincere apologies to anyone here connected to an eastern ski area.

  9. Snowshoe or wisp or mt tremblant

  10. Stratton and Bromley VT are close to Manchester Center, VT and there are lots of outlets, in addition to the downhill skiing, there are 3 XC skiing areas as well as plenty of places to hike or snowshoe. There are a few places in the area that have small cabins for rental, most of which are available through local rental agencies.

Killington, VT also has numerous rental properties. Some of the better ones are north of Killington in Stockbridge or Pittsfield.

While the skiing isn't the absolute best at Whiteface, NY, one can hardly argue with all of the stuff to do in the Lake Placid area. Olympic bobsled rides, ice climbing, shopping in Lake Placid, two brewpubs, hiking, snowshoeing, Just tons of things to do in that area.

Check out North Conway NH as well. Outlets, Skiing, Lots of stuff there too. I've only been there once.
