Question:

Snowboard Maintenance?

At my local mountain all I ride is park. People have told me not to sharpen my board because it will catch on rails. What do I do about the messed up edges and scratches in the base? None of the scratches are deep enough to reach the core but when should I get them fixed and how?

  1. You still need to wax your board and you can get any gashes filled with P-tex without effecting how the board feels on the rails (it'll actually work better for you 'cause you'll have the speed to control your approach to the rail). You can use a stone to de-burr your edges (ceramic $ or diamond $$$) Dakine do good ones. Or you can get your local tech to run the board though an edger so its smooth then run a file down the edge to de-tune it a bit.

  2. You might try what the freestyle skiers did for years, keep the edges sharp in certain portions of the running surface, and clean of burrs the rest of the area. that way the portion on the rails won't catch, but you have enough edge to control the board in the hardpack slopes.

The bases should be filled with a base repair, DIY or shop, then waxed repeatedly until saturated with a hotwax.

  3. when in doubt, take it to the ski shop and have the pros work on it.  they love to answer questions, too!
