My husband and I are taking our 10 year old son and 4 year old daughter to Snowshoe West Virginia and I am about 6 months pregnant. My husband and I usually go alone. My husband and stepson will be snowboarding and I was trying to think of some ways for my daughter (and myself) to have some fun in the snow. I have ruled out snowboarding or tubing for myself but what else is there but shopping. I was hoping maybe I could just go to the bottom of the tubing hills or something like that and let her sled a little bit. (Nothing that would be too dangerous for her or for me because I am pregnant. ) It seems like I might not be able to do that either because I am not sure how we'd get to the bottom of the slopes? I have also only ever been to Snowshoe to go snowboarding so I am not sure how tubing is set up? Would we be in the way of others? What would you do for fun if you were me other than just shopping and eating! :) Thanks for any ideas you might come up with.

  1. I know you don't want to hear this, but it is dangerous for you to ski or snowboard. Stick to building a snowman, making snow angels, and throwing snowballs.  If you want to take a sled, that's fine if you are really fit you could probably pull a 4 year old around, but not up and down the mountain. If you are staying at the lodge there, bring your bathing suits, there is an indoor heated swimming pool and when we took our kids from the youth group they loved that as much as skiing! They also have a game room and a very nice area to eat at or just get a cup of hot chocolate! I'm not sure about tubing, we didn't do that. Have a good time!

  2. Chubby snow angels.

She might get a kick out of being towed in a sled, much like toddlers like getting a ride in a wagon.  The fact that it is on snow might make it interesting for, even, the ten year old, for a little while.

You might also find out if you can arrange for a daytime sleigh ride.  I don't know about your particular resort, but most will have such a ride set up behind a span of horses, which ALL little girls love.  Four is also not too young to help build a snowman.

What about buying her a couple of disposable, single use cameras?  If you are up there more than a few days, she can take some photos and you can have them developed before you leave, even overnight is many cases.  Some may offer one hour processing!

Of course, I don't have to tell you to be sure you are both dressed warmly and wearing gloves or mittens.

  3. I have never been there but I know of some ski resorts that have horse-drawn sleigh rides or dog sled rides.  That would be fun.  If you are not from snow country, then just playing in the snow will be fun for your daughter.  Make snowmen, snow angels, have a snowball fight.
