I am going to get a burton custom but I have some questions. I wear a size twelve shoe and I weigh 230. About how long should my board be and does it need to be wide. Thanks for any help

  1. The board needs to be wide enough so that your boots don't catch when you lean to turn left or right.  That depends on the settings you have on bindings -- if you have your feet turned out more, you can get by with a narrower board.  Also, notice that boots have a curve on the sole keeping the toes and heels from catching, so my board is actually a littler narrower than my boots at my settings and they don't catch.

As far as the length, I found out that it isn't that critical unless you are in deep powder.  At the slopes I go to (in the east), it is groomed snow and (ha) some ice layers. The shorter the board, the quicker you will turn.  When I started boarding about 10 years ago, I spent a lot of worry time on the length of my board. When I got to the slope, I saw skiers with ski's equal to their height, neck height, and snow blades (about 20 inches long)  That is when I realized there is a lot of hype out there!

Unless you need the flotation for the deep snow, then go with a bigger board.

I settled for a board that was a about two inches lower than my chin.  That gave me the quick turns I wanted for the slopes I visited.  What kind of boarding are you doing?  Big long slopes, lazy turns = longer board.  Pipe, narrow trails, fast zig-zag turns = shorter board.   BTW, I'm 210 lbs.

Then you can check on side radius and flexibility, so you aren't done yet - lol !

  2. yeah with size 12 shoes you are going to want to get the Custom Wide. and then for the length you will just put the board standing up on the floor and the tip of the board should be anywhere from your Chin to your nose. No higher then the nose

  3. well typically the length of the board should be around chin area when placed on the floor. im guessing with size 12 shoes you would probably need some risers for your bindings. a wider board would prevent your foot from hanging off the board, but a wider board are also harder to turn.
