I've never even been to a housewarming party. What do you do at one? What should I serve?

  1. Appetizer 7 Layer Dip always a hit!

    Layers from bottom to top:

One can refried beans with garlic powder and Picante sauce

(cook the beans with a little bit of garlic powder and a small jar of Picante sauce)

3-4 smashed avocados with 1 tsp. oil, lemon juice, finely chopped onion

    Sour cream

    Chopped tomatoes

    Chopped green onions

    Chopped black olives

    Shredded Colby Cheese

Serve with Tortilla Chips or Corn Chips your choice.

When layered in a glass bowl it really looks nice!

  2. When ever I host (don't have to be a new house) I would always serve the following:

    Drink:

Pineapple sorbet, crushed ice and ginger ale.  Mix all together and you get a wonderful drink.

    Finger foods:

Go to Cost Co and get a bag of Swedish meat balls, party wings and a platter of cheeses.  With the meat balls, place them in the oven and pour bar-b-que sauce over them.  When they are done, you can place them in a bowl with toothpicks.

Party wings, you can pour a bottle of Coca-Cola over them and ketchup.  Let them cook. I know it sounds nasty, but it makes it's own teriyaki sauce.  Same thing, place it on a platter and puts some tongs next to them. With the cheese platter, place toothpicks in the cheeses and I would suggest buying "little smokies" sausages and placing a bowl in the middle with the sausage. Don't try to do everything by scratch. I have tried before and it is too much time.

  3. Hmmm...maybe it is just me, but doesn't the one with the new home usually host their own party?

Leaving that aside, I would set up a buffet table with things that are easy to grab & eat, since housewarming parties are often like an "open house"...come & go as you please.  I would have small sandwiches along with a fruit platter and maybe some cupcakes or cupcake sized cheesecakes.

I'll even offer you the recipe for the cheesecakes:

    PETITE CHEESECAKES

2 (8 oz) cream cheese, softened

    3/4 cup sugar

    2 eggs

    1 Tablespoon lemon juice

    1 teaspoon vanilla

    24 vanilla wafers

1 can (1 pound, 5 ounces) cherry (or blueberry) pie filling

Beat cream cheese, sugar, eggs, lemon juice & vanilla until light and fluffy.  Line regular muffin pans with cupcake papers (or the foil ones are really pretty); place a vanilla wafer in each and fill 2/3 full with cream cheese mixture.

Bake at 375 for 15-20, or until set.  Cool & top each with about 1Tb. of pie filling and chill.

    Makes about 2 dozen

Best wishes to you & your sister too!  She's a lucky lady to have such a sweet sister!

  4. Invite everyone and then when they get there, have snacks and drinks.  I would fix a table with finger sandwiches, chips, dip etc......

I would have a cake made and I would serve coffee and drinks.  Then everyone will chat and watch your sister open her gifts.

  5. Hey since its your first house warming party you shouldnt be to extravagant. Try doing finger foods since it may be a lot of mingling with other guests. Dont make it too casual and let it flow at everyones own expense, that way no one is pressured to stop conversating with others to eat. Also the food can sit out longer instead of it becoming un-appealing to the guest if they dont want to eat it at the time it is prepared. Secondly try an open salad bar with sliced roasted chicken. Hope this helps. take it easy and good luck. Also  Here's a great recipe for a homemade punch:

2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice

1 cup freshly squeezed ruby red grapefruit juice

    3 cups pineapple juice

2 cups watermelon, cut into bitesized chunks

2 cups fresh pineapple, cut into bitesized chunks

    2 oranges, cut into wedges

    1 lemon, sliced

    2 limes, quartered

2 cans (12 ounces each) lemon lime soda (recommended: Squirt)

    Crushed ice

Mix everything together except the Squirt and ice. Let sit for 30 minutes. Fill glasses with ice and fill 3/4 of the way with the punch. Add a splash of the Squirt just before serving.
