Cuba is not, and never was, a puppet. Cuba also is not a banana republic (one can hardly count cigars as a sole, life giving export), and Cuba is not evil (they've never done anything to suggest they are, such as starting a war, invading a country, or actually, even threatening anyone.)

Cuba is a small country, a single-party dicatorship with a brilliant health care system, the best health stats in the developing world, the only country that ever cared about Angolans (saved millions from the US-backed South Africans), and crushed by a vicious embargo by the states. Cuba is not a paradise, but nor is it evil, and for all its (substantial - just as Journalists Without Borders) failings, its still done more for ordinary people than the US.
