So, did Blu-Ray win against HD DVD's?

I realized that Best Buy (along with some other electronics stores) is no longer carrying HD DVD's and HD DVD players. They're selling Blu-Ray discs at discounted prices, too.

  1. don't know sorry but HD stuff is cheaper than blue-ray and they do the same

  2. Last month, Toshiba, the main producer of HD DVD quit like H. Ross Perot leaving all the HD DVD owners hanging.

Some say digital downloads will replace blu ray soon. That's bull!!!

    1) Download speeds are disturbingly slow (a movie can easily take more than an hour).

    2) Storage space is excessive (a high def movie with surround runs like 15-25 GB) so 500 GB hard drives are too small (a full season of Lost will fill one up more than halfway).

    3) Many people still want the physical media (the actual disc) when they purchase a movie.

It's still too early to buy a Blu-Ray (they will get MUCH cheaper eventually). The only people who should buy a Blu Ray are people who want a gaming console too. Get a PS3 and you are set. Otherwise tough it out till the prices drop.

  3. Yes, but some of movies that were only released on HD-DVD  may take a while to be released on Blu-Ray format.  So, I'm still leaning towards buying a dual-format drive for my computer, like the one from LG.  (It's less than $200, reads BD and HD-DVD, reads and writes DVD and CD.)

  4. yeah it did so if u have any hd dvds u cant buy the players anymore and u cant buy them anymore either...blu ray will be replaced by liek ondemad soon anyway(probably)....?

  5. Essentially, yes.

The majority of movie studios supported Blu-Ray Disc, but an announcement from Warner Home Video for exclusive support for Blu-Ray Disc likely set in motion a certain chain of events.

Retailers began to announce support of Blu-Ray Disc.  First, it was Netflix and Blockbuster Video.  Then, stores started to announce exclusivity to Blu-Ray Disc.  The last straw was Wal-Mart; Wally world announced it would sell Blu-Ray only and liquidate its inventory of HD-DVD products.

Toshiba, as the company that spearheaded HD-DVD, announced that it would discontinue development, manufacturing, and marketing of HD-DVD players.  It would continue support for those who currently have Toshiba HD-DVD players, but Toshiba was abandoning the format otherwise.

This hands victory of this format war to Sony and the Blu-Ray Disc Association.

  6. yes they stopped converting movies to hd-dvd

its all blu-ray now as far as hd movies go

  7. yes

  8. yes..but honestly I couldn't see the difference between hd dvd and a bluray..picture quality looks the same..

  9. Yes, last month Toshiba announced they are ending production of HD-DVD's.

Ps3 is currently the cheapest blu-ray player on the market.
