I want to be come a psychologist, or a counselor (they're the same thing, right?). Anyway, if I went to college and got a degree in sociology, would I have to get a degree in something else, or what?

I've been researching this for the past two weeks, and haven't found a clear answer.

  1. First, a psychologist and counsellor are not the same thing. A counsellor helps people through difficult issues. A psychologist can also do this, but they tend to have a broader set of skills, with a far more in depth knowledge. They can administer tests, and may specialise in a particular area of psychology, such as education or psychopathology.

If you wish to become a counsellor, then an undergraduate degree in sociology will be useful, as you will be able to take a graduate course in counselling or even social work.

To become a registered psychologist, you would normally have an undergraduate degree with a major in psychology. Then graduate training in psychology, up to doctorate level. However, if you are already majoring in sociology, there may be a conversion course that is recognised by the registration body in your state or area.

  2. why not get the degree in psychology?

  3. I am in college right now for a bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, then, if I wish I may move on to get a Master's in Sociology, or go right for the Ph.D. Or you could do the same in Psychology. I like both, and if you do maybe you should focus on getting degrees to become a Social Psychologist. They deal with both social and psychological aspects of life.

  4. I'm a Soc. major also, and my understanding is if you want to counsel you can with a masters in Soc., but you would need a ph d in psych to be a psych

  5. You could get a MSSW (Masters of Social Work)

  6. Son is obtaining his Masters in Sociology and Psychology

  7. No, you shouldn't have to. I'm not really sure though you might have wanted to post this in the careers and employment section

  8. You'll need your PhD to in Psychology. . .
