at 1:00 a good time for Big Brown today?

I have all of these times and distances but have no idea how they compare to the rest of the field, to his prior "pre-race workouts" or even the "Big Guns" times.

Can anyone tell me how this 5 furlongs in 1:00 compares to whatever-you-all-compare-it-to??

Also, here are some other numbers -

On a fast main track, Big Brown carved out fractions of 23 3/5 for the opening quarter-mile, and 35 1/5 for three-eighths of a mile, according to New York Racing Association clockers. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:14 2/5. The work was the fastest of seven at the distance.

So, what does all of that tell you? I don't bet - I just love to watch the races...but admit freely I only watch the "Big 3" each year - but have for at least 20 years. I know a little, but certainly not enough to know what any of this means!

  1. he is a running machine!!!

  2. He ran fast for the first time since the Preakness to test his injured foot is what that means. Six others breezed at that distance and Big Brown was the fastest at that distance.

  3. Yes, that's a very good time.  Breeze means that he wasn't pushed at all to go faster.  Good workouts are in 12s... each furlong should be in about 12 seconds... 24 for 2 furlongs, 36 for 3 furlongs, 48 for 4 furlongs, 1:00 for 5 furlongs.  The fact that he was the fastest of all 7 workouts at the distance means that it was really good.  It does suggest that his quarter crack doesn't bother him much at all.
