  7. Well as you might well have expected, Bob presented his ideas despite everyone's insistence that he would be better off leaving it with the guys in research. And they were the ones who developed the first theoretical schematic. But Bob is Bob as he is found of saying. So 12 noon today he took his chances.

We all expected him out by 12:05, but by 2:30, no one had left. Robin told us that she had never seen a meeting that lasted that long. Adding to the mystery, at 3:15  Ed (steady Eddy as he likes to be called), came out red as a beet and yelled for all the carbon nanotubes that were in Testing.

By that point every department was in a turmoil. Nothing like this had ever happened. Well, not unless you count the initial experiments- but even they eventually malfunctioned. But this time, this, was somehow different! Something was on the horizon and moving fast.

Some of us, perhaps for our own sanity, tried to minimize the significance of this development, yet we all knew that nanotubes were an unknown perhaps even taboo territory. All doubts immediately evaporated once it was discovered that Jill had been called in.

Jill is never called in. Not without considerable deliberation. The few times is had been necessary, it had taken a few weeks to fill the vacuum her absence created. This time was obviously beyond important!

As she walked past, we all took our usual positions, struggling not to stare. We were all admittingly awestruck by her beauty but it was something more, much more and yet words could never be found to do it justice.  Perhaps it was her enigmatic smile which could tell more than one would ever know. That is, if they had the courage to pay attention. Perhaps it was her look, a look that could either cure or kill, depending on what was needed. In any event, we all experienced a feeling of extraordinary intense calm as she walked by and into the meeting.

All of us new the Jill and Bob went way back. There was a history there that no one dared to imagine. A history that could supposedly melt stone. Of course, it was mostly idle office gossip, 90% fantasy and 10% speculation. But a few of the older staff alluded to things being a great deal different before the accident. Before the "chair" as he likes to be called and all the other powers that be, threw the switch and implemented Operation Tin Man!

Now looking back, the dust, still not settled, we can at least see that our initial conclusions were wrong, dead wrong. But no one blames us-that is, the few that are still capable of blaming.  Our souls now honed by the fevered intensity of the past few years, could we dare to expect anything less?
