  1. Simple Pioneer is already on top of this with their HD Blueray combo player.

    Good Luck.

  2. The victory of blu-ray over hd-dvd means that for the folks with a HDTV, but wary of buying a HD player in the middle of a format war, finally have a clear answer of which one to buy.  Otherwise, it really means nothing.

Blu-ray players have always been able to play DVDs, and even upscale them to HDTV resolutions.  So if or when you buy a blu-ray player, your existing DVDs will still be playable.

If you still don't have a HDTV yet, blu-ray means nothing to you.  While you can connect a blu-ray player to a regular TV, it won't improve your DVDs, and even blu-ray discs will look the same as the DVD version.  Also, there currently isn't anything on blu-ray that isn't available in some form on DVD.

DVD will be around for a long, long time to come. Even when DVD was the new kid on the block, it still took the market over a decade to finally phase out VHS and VCRs altogether.  In fact, it wasn't until 2001 or so that DVD sales finally overtook VHS sales.  By that timeline, there should still be new releases on DVD until almost 2020 and maybe even longer.

  3. It means nothing if you only have regular dvd's. Usually blu ray players will play regular dvd formats you just have to make sure that if you buy a blu ray player it has this function. HD-DVD's are not the same as regular dvd's they are dvd's in HD format. Blu Ray is another type of high definition DVD that is better as far as quality and space you have on the dvd. Blu Ray won out because it is a better technology than HD-DVD.
