So...I didn't make the team. But the coach says managerial positions are open. What does a student volleyball manager do? Will I get to practice with the team? Will this help me stay acquainted with the coach so that I have a better chance at tryouts next year (along with private lessons and joining a league elsewhere)?

  1. A volleyball manager might do any combination of the following things:

Become the team's official scorekeeper:  An official score keeper is required at all home games.  It's a good thing to have a scorekeeper at away matches too if there are gross discrepancies between score sheets.  Sometimes this scorekeeper also controls the game display.

Become a statistician:  Players and coaches rely largely on statistics to make in game or post game decisions.  You would track and record several events.

Take a practice role:  Sometimes a manager might be able to practice with the team if an extra body is needed, if someone's out.

Equipment manager:  Sometimes, a manager would assist in gathering balls and other gear for the team for practice, or during game warmups.  Not a job with much glory, but it still keeps you involved.

Line Judge:  Depending on what state you live in, home teams might be required to provide line judges.  Coaches and refs love dependable line judges.

Cameraman:  Sometimes coaches will request that each game be recorded, and that means someone has to operate a camera.

All these things will certainly keep you in tune with the sport, and on the good side of the coach provided you do a good job.  Being around and involved somewhat will certainly increase your chances of making the team next year.

    Hope this helped.
