  1. He was too young for the Korean conflict. He graduated law school in 1968 and ran for the Senate in 1972. So, I assume he had a 2-S (student) deferment for the draft during the Vietnam Era.

    EDIT: Since another poster brought it up, Asthma after age 12, along with exercise-induced bronchospasms, reaactive airway disease and asthmatic bronchitis is disqualifying for entry into the armed forces. That same standard existed during the Vietnam Era as well. The source below is the current medical standard
