Question:

So I'm studying for my A Levels at Sixth Form...?

...And I know I've done badly in my exams, not because I've been an idiot, but because I always manage to run out of time. I have been predicted A grades but I think I'll be lucky to get a B. I will do some retakes but I can't keep going on like this!

So would you say that a B grade is bad? I was looking at some student forums and the people there were all disgusted that they got Bs instead of their A*s and As..

Also, lets just say I got 3 B grades for my AS Levels, and then the same in my A2 Levels, how many points would that give me - and would that be good enough to get into a course at Uni in a few years time? Could I also do another course to up my points later on?

Do I make any sense?? Someone please help me..

Thanks =] x*x

  1. Three Bs at A level are 300 UCAS points. You don't count AS and A level separetely, unless you only have half an A level (just the AS). So for example, I have an AS level which I didn't continue in year 13, which I got a B for. This is 50 UCAS points on its own. And I have also just taken three A levels (waiting for the results now). If it turned out I got three Bs (I'll be extremely lucky to) that would make 300 UCAS points, plus 50 points from my AS level, so 350 points all together. So sorry if that's confusing. I will simplify it a bit:

AS Levels - An A is 60 points and it goes down 10 points for each grade. So B=50, C=40 etc.

A Levels - An A is 120 points (double the AS) and every other grade is double the number of points it would be for AS (B=100, C=80 etc)

You don't count AS and A levels separately when adding up UCAS points, unless you have only an AS in one subject.

Anyway, in my opinion a B is very good and it is hard to get an A (although it depends on the subject). You can't get A* so I wouldn't worry about about people wanting them. They are thinking about bringing them back though (due to it apparently being easier to get three As now and Oxford and Cambridge are complaining).

Three Bs would get you into a lot of unis, although the requirements are obviously different for every course and every university. My advise is: if you get Bs, unless you feel you can definitely get As by resiting, don't resit. You will have enough on your plate with A2s. A B is a perfectly respectable grade.

  2. B's are pretty good. It all seems important now but remember its the means to the next stage and on to the end. Some of my grades were a bit pants along the way, but I ended up getting a distinction at graduate level, which kind of wipes all that out.

  3. 'B' is an Excellent Grade to Achieve.

    A Pass is a Pass.

  4. 3 B grades at AS level is 150 UCAS points.

If you got the same at A level - that would be 240 points.

So altogether, 390 points altogether...which is a very decent score! If you go to unistats.com, find the course and/or uni that you are thinking of applying for, it will tell you the average number of points you will need to get on to it.

  5. That makes perfect sense. C's are considered average, so you're doing fine. It really depends on the University. Some might have all A students, others might not.

    Good luck.
