I live in Arkansas...i know....i know... but I am really interested in learning to scuba dive and I want to go sky diving at least once...What do I need to buy? I don't want to go into this scuba thing not knowing and then get taken for a ride and pay a lot of money I don't need to pay. any suggestions? I really don't even know what I'm looking for in a tank, a class, or even what kind of fins I need to scuba dive.

  1. Is Arkansas completely devoid of scuba? Your best bet is to check with some YMCAs in your area. I'm sure that at least one of them must have a scuba program. The other option is to check with some dive shops in the area, they may run their own certification programs.

  2. For scuba, you want a beginner's class run by a PADI, the worldwide group that certifies & trains divers and instructors.

The link below is to the main PADI page. There should be a link to find a dive center near you. (There are a couple in AR.)

The PADI instructors I've met are great with "newbies". They'll explain all about equipment, etc. Once you decide you like the class, you'll likely want your own mask, snorkel, and fins. Your instructor will tell you what to look for.

    Good luck!!!

  3. If you go for your scuba certification, you don't need to buy all the equipment. You are usually just required to purchase a mask, fins and snorkel. In fact, I wouldn't purchase anything more than that in the beginning. Make sure you like diving first and you can get a feel for the equipment so you have a better idea of what would work for you when the time comes to make the other equipment purchases.

You can get certified anywhere. I got certified in Manhattan NY. I did the training there and did my open water dives in Antigua. But you can do your open water dives in a lake or a quarry, as many people do who live near me in upstate NY. I'm sure there is something around where you live that people use. Check with dive shops, the local Y or college near you. Someone should offer lessons. Now you can even take the book training portion online.

I'm not going to tell you it is a cheap hobby to have, because it's not. But it is a heck of alot of fun!

  4. i dont know that town or place u are in ... you should be able to go on a "discovery dive" it dosent cost much and they will teach u LOTS or try freediving... as with sky diving you can do a tandem dive here in australia for only $300 au and if you like it you can upgrade levels and end up doing it solo not tandem but for things that are adventuors there is like discovery trips..

ALSO TRY www.freedive.webs.com not yet comlpete but nearly!!
