Question:

So I've been taking off in 2nd gear, and now it will only chug and die at slower speeds in 2nd gear.?

Someone told me it'd be fine if I took off in 2nd gear all the time, and that it would just chug a little before I gave it enough gas to take off. Well after my first real run with it on the road, it refuses to move from low speeds in 2nd, and I'll be forced to shift to first. Rarely it will manage to "fight" past the chugging, slowly gaining rpms past 2000, then it will run at full efficiency. Was I misled to believe that its fine to start in 2nd gear. I've been riding around the neighborhood getting used to the bike, shifting and such, although i've almost always stayed in 2nd gear with no problems. Could I have caused permanent damage?

  1. lover dude is right

  2. I doubt you have done any permanent serious damage..

May have fouled a plug or something, taking off in second gear put a lot of strain on the engine, you have to give it more gas to get the bike to move, but it isn't getting enough air..runs rich, its hard for your rockers to open the valves because it the time there is still combustion going on in the cylinder which creates pressure.

Imagine being on a 10 speed, taking off from a dead start in 3rd gear instead of first...how much harder is that on your legs?

Pull your plugs out and change them.. I would imagine that are covered with carbon and you are no longer getting a clean burn. You may also want to run a tank of fuel with bottle of cleaner in it to clean your top end.

Stop taking off in first gear, it is HARD on your engine....that chain rattle sound is your valve train trying to operate against pressure still in the cylinders... and thats BAD NEWS.

Oh, and pay no attention to biker...he is just mad that his chug chug does exactly what yours is doing..except there isn't anything wrong with his but the name on the tank!!!! Teh only taime he can get his out of second gear is down hill with a tail wind. Chuuuuuug Chuuuuug Chuuuug Chuuug Chuug Chug... click... Chuuuuuug Chuuuuug Chuuuug Chuuug Chuug Chug....click.... Chuuuuuuuuuuuuuug  Chuuuuuuuuuuuug Chuuuuuuuuuuuuuuug ooops, back to second... Click.. Chuuuuuuuug Chuuuuuuuuuuug

Bah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!! 25 grand?????

  3. Your an idiot.

  4. So, you have taken advice from ‘someone’, you think it is incorrect, so you ask here, an arena where you are able to answer another question about gears – how do you sort the wheat from the chaff?

On most bikes, first gear’s only use is for pulling away from a halt (some off-road bikes use first a lot longer for gentle bimbling).

    Q. Why would you put extra strain on your engine and damage your clutch and drivetrain – slipping it like mad to avoid stalling and putting extra strain on the chain and sprockets – by not using first.

    A. By listening to ‘someone’.

Moral. Be careful who you choose to listen to.

This is probably harsh but it does highlight the reasons for going on a training course, there you will be trained how and when to change gears, it is unlikely you have done any serious damage in a short time although it is possible you have glazed the plates of the clutch with slipping and shortened the life of the chain.

  5. You NEVER want to chug and engine....why would there be a first gear if you didn't need it.....The name "FIRST" says a great deal......

Good luck on your bike and I hope you learn to enjoy it and have others in the future....

  6. >>  Was I misled to believe that its fine to start in 2nd gear.

Don't do it.  It is extra wear and tear on your clutch and engine.

Also you can make your engine knock so that will destroy your engine.

    Good Luck...

  7. you should never lug an engine and should always start off in first thats what it'is there for
