Ok first off im the guy making multiple questions a day about hamsters leading up to today. (if any of you have been in my topics).

So any ways i went to petsmart and this lady was really helpful. I got a dwarf which im thinking is a Winter White (Nice because i have always wanted one.) But any ways she told me to get Dry tail. Its a medicine that they use on all thier hamsters to treat wet tail So im asking if this actually works.

So will Dry Tail Work if our hamster gets Wet tail?

another question is how long should i let him be in his new home before i star to interact with him?

Also Aspen Is good for hamstes right? (Bought a 41 L for $12 because of what i have read.)

Also any Name suggestions for my hamster. ( Its a male I checked first)

----

PS the Petsmart i was at was very helpful. The lady was nice and gave advice. i think she actually knew alot about hamsters.

Also the cages were not very packed. Then again i got the last dwarf they had

  1. who cares why dont u feed it to my lizards!?!?!?!?

  2. I think I agree with the nice lady.usually people who work there know a lot about the animals there because they work there.by the way congrats on your cute little hamster.

  3. Firstly congragulations on your new hammie -

Here goes answers to your questions -

Aspen is the best bedding for hamsters, so you made the right choice.

Name suggestions - go to the following site which has an exhaustive list of hamster names

    http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/namelists...

I am worried about why the lady at Petsmart gave you Dry Tail. It is normally not given as part of starter kit for hammies. Does she suspect wet tail in the hammie she gave you? Do have a word with her on this since Wet Tail is a dangerous bacterial infection and can cause the hamster's death. If your hammie has wet tail, you would have to rush him to the vet to treat it. Medications like Dry Tail are not very useful unless the sickness is in its early stages which you cannot be sure about since you got your hammie only now.

Added on later - Oh if she has given it to you only as a precautionary measure, then it is fine. I should appreciate the fine service at Petsmart and they seem to be very knowledgeable about their pets.

Hamsters take some time to get used to their new surroundings so let them be in their cage for 3-4 days before you start handling them.

Use the following instructions for handling your hamster in the correct manner -

STEP 1 - When you first get your hamster leave it alone for the first 2 - 3 days to let it get used to it's new cage and surroundings. If you pick him up on the first day itself, he will definitely bite you since you are a stranger to him.

STEP 2 - Once the hammy seems comfortable in his new cage, start talking to him softly and hang around his cage enough for him to get used to your voice and smell. After this time feed your hamster some treats from your hand so he get used to seeing your hand. This might take a few days to happen but be patient. If you feel that the hamster still bites you, you can use gloves initially.

PRECAUTION - always interact with the hamster only when he is active. If you touch him or disturb him when he is sleeping, he can get angry and bite viciously.

STEP 3 - Once your hamster seems confident with taking treats out of your hand you can try to start handling your hamster. Before you handle your hamster make sure you have washed your hands well. Hamsters have a strong sense of smell. If they smell something on your hand they may mistake it for food and decide to bite!

Get a cup or something similar and place it into the hamster's cage. He should come to investigate and crawl inside. Take the hamster and cup out of the cage and let him walk out onto your hand. While you do this make sure you're sat down or sat close to the floor incase your hamster decides to jump. Let him walk from hand to hand. Be careful you don't grab or wrap your hands around your hamster until he is fully tame as this may scare him and he will jump out of your hand.

STEP 4 - Once your hamster is more confident with you, you can start to pick up your hamster straight from it's cage. Just make sure your hamster is aware that you are there, if not you may suddenly scare the hamster and it may turn around and bite you.

Best way to hold hamsters is to make them climb into one hand and cupping the other hand softly over the body so that his head pokes out from the gap between your two hands. Remember, do not apply any pressure on his body, he will get scared and snap at you.

I wish you great fun with your pet hammie!

  4. First and fore most No!! Dry tail does not work, any hamster that has wet tail, needs treating with antibiotics. Antibiotics cannot be bought over the counter; theses are on prescription only from your vet. Do not use Dri-Tail; at all, and especially on a healthy hamster. In the case of diarrhea this can actually make the situation worse, and complicate matters further. If your Dwarf hamster does at any time get diarrhea, soft or lose stools, then you need to look elsewhere, particularly his diet. Feeding too much fruit, fruit contains Fructose, a naturally occurring sugar. Too many veggies, and green, or green leaf vegetables, feeding hamsters too much of this can cause loose stools or diarrhea, depending how much is eaten.

A lot of people confuse diarrhea, with wet tail, although the clinical signs are the same. Dwarf hamsters do not get the same problem that causes wet tail as in the Syrian hamsters. But they can and do get diarrhea, the same clinical signs of wet tail. If the case is diarrhea, then there is usually no loss of appetite or activity. If he gets diarrhea with a loss of appetite refuses to drink, and reluctance to move around then he has a problem, and will need a vet.
