Question:

So I just left a letter of resignation at my work...?

Some background info: In sept. I get a bonus of $1.50 for every hour I have worked. (I've been working here since the beggining of July.) I asked HR and they said that as long as I am an employee on Aug. 31st, I am still eligible for the bonus even if I quit or get fired. So I am doing just that. I requested the last weekend of august off (for highschool orientation), and told the managers in my department (in my letter) that I will not be available to work from sept.1-4 with the 5th being my very last day of work they can schedule me. I told my boss I was gonna quit and he didnt seem too happy.

Oh yeah, I hate this job and I have a better one during the school year. (Even though the pay is a whole dollar less an hour.)

Do you think they'll give me those days off? I requested them last weekend. (8-10-08)

Now, I keep getting this bad feeling everytime I think of it. Do you think my boss will hate me? I mean, I did give a two week notice. Was the move I did a Jack *** move?

  1. What can they do ... fire you? You've resigned. It's nice of you to give them notice - but since you've only been there since July there is no legal justification for them to expect ANY notice. You are just being a nice person, don't worry so much about whether you are being nice enough. They may not actually pay that bonus, even though they told you you would get it - it may just be a lie - used like a carrot on a string and held out in front of a mule, the mule is never allowed to get the carrot.

  2. It does sound like you have yourself in a sticky situation.  I agree with the person who said you need to take your orientation schedule.  I'm confused as to why you can't work Sept. 1-4.  If some of those days do not land on high school orientation, it may make you look bad.  You'll probably be biting your nails up to the last minute.  If the boss wants to, they could fire you on August 29th out of spite, meaning you lose your bonus.  Just collect all your paperwork and keep in contact with HR.

  3. Well I would have documents to back up my letter:

You say you have high school orientation on the last weekend of August. Most students ask for this weekend off because it's the weekend right before school starts... so most want to have one last good fun weekend. So by showing school schedule proving that you are having orientation then that base would be covered.

As for dates Sept 1-4 I would just say that due to your school... your availability has to change because you can not let your job interfere with your school performance... thus only leaving Friday (a non-school night) as your last date.

If you're really nice you would offer to work the 5th and the 6th... but shouldn't be obligated to.

They really can't say much when it's you who's quiting... but then again you do want to leave in good terms in case you have to come back to them as a reference.

  4. No, I suspect they know that the start of school will be predisposed to turnover.   As for giving the days off, couldn't tell ya.  Your boss has to respect at least you gave them notice, so they dont schedule you and you end up a no show.  That's WAY worse.  You're good.
