  1. Sounds like your off to a good sdtart already. Well in boot Camp you are allowed to write a letter every night. You will be able to eat ice cream and stuff like that in the mess hall. You will probably feel pretty lonely the first few days or so. But once you get into routine it will be not so bad. everyone has to do laundry duty at least once while they are there. Used to have the Gas Chamber not anymore. Anything else you want to know just e-mail me.These are all things my mom and dad told me.

  2. You already have a huge advantage over over basic trainees with your ROTC experience.  While other people stumbling around learning to march and messing up their reporting statements you'll look like the shining example of your flight.  Don't be surprised if you're made an Element Leader.

The first couple of days will be hard on you.  The first night in your bunk after an evening of TI's and OJT Dorm Guards screaming at you will have you wondering if you didn't just make the biggest mistake of your life.  You'll be depressed and stressed out, but just patience, by the 3rd week you'll have gotten used to Basic, and by your last couple of weeks you'll feel like a god amongst all the incoming trainees.  Some people let the stress get to them the first few weeks and end up doing something stupid that either gets them recycled or kicked out.  Don't be one of those people!

Here is a list of practical things that you can do which will make your basic go smoothly:

    1.  Learn and practice your reporting statement BEFORE you get to Basic.  People messing up their reporting statement accounts for about 50% of TI's yelling!

    2.  Make sure you are in shape and can at least come close to meeing the AF fitness standards by the time you arrive at Basic.  I saw a few guys in my flight get recycled for failing the final fitness or have to struggle practicing sit-ups and push-ups late at night in the dorm because they were close to failing.

    3.  If you have a chance to pick your Dorm Guard shift you should choose one late at night.  Late at night there will be hardly any activity going in and out of the dorm while during the day you'll have a million opportunities to mess up and suffer the wrath of TI's.

    4.  You're given the opportunity to attend church on Sundays and should always take it, even if you're not religious.  It's a relief to be away from the TI's and a good chance to recover yourself mentally if you're feeling stressed.  I prefered the Catholic service just because it was so quiet compared to some of the other services, which were more like loud parties.

Those are just a few things.  Good luck.  I look back on basic now and can't say I loved it, but I can say that it wasn't as bad as I thought it was at the time I was in it.
