Heres the situation-I used to live in the US and still have an OHIO driver's license. I moved to Ontario and got into an accident (at fault) AND got a speeding ticket--both my firsts. So anyways now I live in Alberta and want to swap out my US license for an Alberta one. The way I understood the process when I called the licensing bureau is that you just bring in your license and they give yu the AB one.

So Im wondering if my driving history will already be in the system under my name? Or maybe my US driver's license number? Just wondering how Ontario gives you the ticket...do they send info to the states then? Just wondering for insurance sakes...it might be better to just start of with a beginners?

  1. Well whatever license you held at the time id believe you'd have that ticket on. See from my understanding people from the USA don't have to legally pay the ticket but in your case id make sure you pay it. Plus you got the ticket in Ontario a different province all together. I got a ticket in another province and i too was worried it be held against my license but in fact it doesn't. But keep in mind that if ever in Ontario again and you get a ticket they may suddenly say you've an outstanding fine and keep in mind the fine goes up more the longer you don't pay it.

Basically from my understanding this speeding ticket will be on your license you hold now and when you get an Alberta license it shouldn't be on it. Keep again in mind that you shouldn't mention this Ontario ticket to the new insurance company you get. There is a toll free number you can find for the ministry of transportation in phone book that you can ask these questions but just don't give them your name etc to be safe. Besides they don't ask for names anyways.
