Then why is he the first "black" presidential candidate?

My mother is white and my father is black.

I am not black, and I am not white.

What going on with that?

  1. - Obama calls himself black; that's why

  2. I am multi cultural, and I identify with my black side more. I do not deny or shun my other heritages but that is the way it is for me. I see a bi racial man as well. It should not even matter though. Can he run the country effectively is what I am interested in.

  3. He tells us to call him black

  4. He's not actually black, he's bi-racial.

He probably just feels more connected to his black heritage and culture than he does with his white side. Personally I think he is also doing it for publicity and trying to appeal to "black america" because being a "black man" would sound more attractive to the voters than a "half-white man"

  5. In our society if you're half white/half black then you're pretty much considered black. Look at Alicia Keys and Hallie Berry for example. Technically, it isn't correct, but that's just the way it is.

  6. Because the race of father is importent than mother

  7. He's the first multi-cultured presidential candidate who has gotten this far. Kudos to him.

    :D

  8. doesn't matter! black or not he's still going to be a great president.

  9. He is both, I actually thought he looked venezuelan the first time I saw him but know I know he is black and white. To me he is just bi-racial.

  10. Got me.  I'm still trying to figure out how 1/64th makes you Cherokee.

(Why is this an issue, anyway?)

  11. Perhaps because it's more "newsworthy". Whenever there's a first of something, it always sounds new and exciting to most people. Just my view.
