So Yeon Ryu determined to defend title at the US Women’s Open
So Yeon Ryu is still trilled about what she did at the 2011 US Women’s Open, as she won her first major and LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) title.
Hailing from South Korea, Ryu has been an average player on the LPGA Tour and the LPGA of Korea Tour.
The most glaring aspect of Ryu’s career is that she joined the LPGA Tour in the 2010 season and rose to prominence by winning a major event in just one year.
The rising star, however, has recorded 7 victories on the LPGA of Korea Tour — a feat that makes her stand out among most of the players from South Korea.
Analysts said that for a lesser-known player like Ryu, a triumph at an LPGA event signals a promising start and it can be expected that she will keep moving ahead by performing consistently.
Although the young Korean has not been able to record any wins other than the US Open, she has bright prospects when it comes to major championships.
The last event — Kraft Nabisco Championship — did not go as good as Ryu had wanted it to. She finished tied for the 56th, with a 2-under 70 in the last round at the Mission Hills Country Club.
The field at the US Women’s Open will be as tough as the first major title of the season, as it will be featuring LPGA titans such as the current world number one Yani Tseng and Paula Creamer who won the 2010 edition.
Paula Creamer appears to be in high spirits these days, as she performed well in the first major event of the year — Kraft Nabisco Championship. She finished tied for the 20th.
Ryu said that she is confident and has been training hard on the practice range for the last few years.
Giving an interview to Ladies European Tour in January, this year, Ryu said that she is thrilled to record her first LPGA triumph at the US Open.
The Korean prodigy said that she had not expected to steal the show at Broadmoor Golf Club. “That (US Open) was a huge win for me, because part of my plan was to try and qualify for school in 2011 but now I’m straight into the LPGA so I’m really happy,”
she had said.
