So Yeon Ryu fires 67 in the second round at Crossings Course
South Korean So Yeon Ryu played surprisingly well in the second round of the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic, as she posted a 67 to share the second spot with three other contenders.
Ryu played well in the first round as well, as she registered a 69. However, the second round saw her perform even better. She rose by 11 spots to stand tied for the 2nd on the leaderboard.
Ryu kicked off the round in an unimpressive style at Magnolia Grove’s Crossings Course, as she recorded a double bogey on the 2nd hole. She then parred 3 consecutive holes.
The South Korean was aware of the threat posed by her nearest rival. She regained her composure after the devastating double bogey and shot two straight birdies on the par-5 6th and par-4 7th.
Ryu drained another birdie on the par-4 9th. On the back nine, she displayed a near-flawless performance, as she avoided making any bogeys and recorded four birdies.
The rising star made her fourth birdie on the 10th and parred four consecutive holes. She surprised the spectators and her rivals when she drained 3 straight birdies on the par-4 15th, par-5 16th and the difficult par-3 17th.
Analysts said that despite the blemish on the second hole of the round, Ryu kept her cool and kept moving ahead with balanced strokes.
The South Korean made most of the favourable weather conditions. Experts said that the weather is forecast to remain almost same in the next two rounds — something the contenders will look to capitalise on.
Speaking at the end of the round, Ryu said that she was glad to play among plenty of Korean players. She stated that playing along with her compatriots boosted her confidence.
“Actually, today and yesterday I played with Chella Choi and Na Yeon Choi, so I was really, really comfortable because you know my first language is Korean, so sometimes ‑‑ I mean, if I use English, my mind is a little busy. But yesterday and today it was
really comfortable,” she said.
The 21-year-old admitted that the course was not easy to play, as she had to make extra efforts to make calculate putts.
“This golf course is really tricky green and really big green and really tough putt, but I made a lot of birdie putt because I hit iron shot really perfect,” Ryu commented.
