So Yeon Ryu off to sizzling start in Florida
South Korean So Yeon Ryu displayed a stellar performance in the opening round of CME Group Titleholders 2012, as she shot a 66 to grab an early lead along with two other contenders on Thursday.
Ryu was among the few contenders on the first day of the four-round LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) tournament, who fully capitalised on the favourable weather conditions at The
TwinEagles Club, Naples, Florida.
The other two players who shared the top spot with Ryu were Norwegian Suzann Pettersen and South Korean Sun Young Yoo. Both the contenders made perfect strokes on the fairways and greens.
Ryu opened the round on Thursday morning with a birdie on the first hole. She then parred the four holes and shot another birdie on the par-4 6th hole. Having parred another two
holes, the South Korean star launched a difficult birdie-putt on the par-4 9th hole.
On the back nine, her performance continued to keep her in a better position. Although she fumbled on the greens of par-4 10th as she recorded a bogey, a birdie on the 11th
further boosted her confidence.
She once again impressed the spectators after she launched two consecutive birdies on the 13th and 14th hole.
Speaking to the LPGA Tour at the end of the day, Ryu said that she fully focused on short game and tried not to make too many bogeys, which helped her surge to the top in the end.
“Actually, yesterday on driving range my shot was so bad so I couldn't expect this really great results. But the first I'm really happy with my results so far,” said Ryu who won the 2012
Jamie Farr Toledo Classic.
She went to say that she has not been satisfied with her short game lately. “Actually, the last week on Sunday in Lorena Ochoa Invitational, my putt wasn't really great. That problem is really
speed control problem, so I was practice speed control, then today my putting was really great”.
The first round was not devoid of challenge as other contenders also tried hard to make a charge in the top spot. American Cristie Kerr was among those who shot a 67 on Thursday to take the
share of fourth position.
