So Yeon Ryu storms to top in first round of British Open 2012
South Korean So Yeon Ryu impressed the spectators in the first round of Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012, as she posted a 70 to grab an early lead along with fellow South Korean Haeji Kang.
The Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012 is being staged at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, Wirral, United States, with most of the big names in the roster.
South Korean LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) stars once again grabbed the attention as they kept their rivals at bay in the opening round.
Ryu kicked off the round on Thursday in impressive style as she parred the first hole and shot a birdie on the second, ramping up pressure on rivals right from the start. However, the South Korean golfer faltered
on the next hole as she faced difficulty judging the ball and ended up carding a bogey.
Weather conditions remained quite calm on Thursday, which helped players make balanced strokes on most of the holes. Since most of the non-European contenders are not used to playing in places like Wirral,
the best score recorded on the first day was 70.
Commentators said that if weather remains calm in the next three rounds and wind does not trouble players, it is expected that the match will get even tougher.
The weather had been pretty rough just a day before the tournament started, but now that winds have eased off to a great extent, players want to capitalise on favourable course conditions.
Speaking to the media at the end of the round, the LPGA titan said that she is happy that the weather conditions were good on Thursday, which helped her make solid strokes on most of the holes.
“Especially yesterday, the weather was so bad.  It was really strong wind and really huge rains, so I was shocked.  Oh, this is my first time playing the British Open and this is my first time visiting England,
so everything is a first experience for me,” Ryu said.
She went on to say that she is in high spirits after making a solid start in the 2012 season. “But especially I'm staying with my coach, Ian Triggs, and last week I won the KLPGA tournament and I'm confident
so that's why I'm playing really consistently.  And especially today, the weather was not bad”.
