  1. Bill Maher is correct.  When all factors are taken into account (i.e. methane emissions from burping and manure, land use change from converting forests to pasture land, etc.), livestock account for about 18% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions while cars only account for 9% worldwide.  I discussed this finding here:

Nobody is suggesting we kill all cows.  The fact of the matter is, the only reason there are so many livestock is because there is such a large demand for beef.  If we simply reduced our beef consumption, we would raise fewer cattle and they would have less of an impact on global warming, as I discuss here:

  2. AGW is foolish.

  3. I like watching his show and sometimes he (Bill Maher) and the panel (guests) does make sense but, somethings that comes out of his mouth is just ridiculous.  Yes, cows and some dairy animals do give off green house gases that do harm our future but, so do we.  Farmers that deal in beef and dairy cattle are doing a better job at controlling and preventing gases from reaching our atmosphere than, the government is with cars, factories, etc. etc.  Take heed to what that guy says because allot of the times he tries to impose his views on the viewer.

  4. Why does everything need to be one extreme or the other!

Either we ALL eat meat and we ALL die!!!

    Or

We ALL stop eating meat and we find something else that will make us die ALL die, no middle ground!

  5. Yes, it's true. According to an UN publication called "Livestock's Long Shadow," beef production accounts for more greenhouse gasses than all forms of human transportation combined.

  6. Wait, you are objecting to getting rid of animals that are slaughtered for food on the grounds it is unethical to kill them?  The cognitive dissonance of that position is playing Sousa marches.

I don't think anyone is realistically saying we should eliminate cattle.  Most people who study greenhouse gas mitigation strategies will argue eating less meat is sufficient rather than completely eliminating it.  Maybe a few times per week instead of three times a day.

God I know, that smacks of socialism.  You let them take away your bacon double cheeseburgers and pretty soon you'll be wearing a cap with a red star on the peak.
