Well I just really miss him right now, just think if he never had the accident he would probably be at home with the Triple Crown trophy in his stable.

What are your thoughts about him?

  1. In case you're not aware, perhaps this news is well timed -

    Brother to Barbaro

    April 30, 2007

A FULL brother to Barbaro, one of the few colts with an unbeaten record in the Kentucky Derby, was foaled in Kentucky 10 days ago.

La Ville Rouge, an 11-year-old Carson City mare, delivered the Dynaformer colt at the Mill Ridge Farm -- her fourth male of four live foals she has produced.

She has a return booking to Dynaformer, a $US150,000-fee son of Roberto, with owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson hoping for a filly to Barbaro, which they kept to race and win the 2006 Kentucky Derby.

  2. I think he was a great horse, and I think it was very mean of Greg to be so dismissive! People should not answer like that!

  3. He certainly had the potential to be a very good racer.  But perhaps his true path was to be remembered for his off-track story.  His legacy certainly lives on in the horses who have been rescued from slaughter by the Friends of Barbaro Foundation, the much needed funds the Barbaro Foundation raises that will be devoted to the study of laminitis, etc.

I know no horse will ever replace Barbaro, but check out this video of his new baby brother http://www.heraldleaderphoto.com/multime... .  The phrase 'hope springs eternal' is especially resonant for racing fans.

  4. Melissa,

He probably would be home a Triple Crown Winner. But think of all that's now being done to help horses (and other animals) because of what happened to him. We do love him and miss him. Starlight1 is right, he is in a better place now.

Someone answered here that his owners wouldn't be celebrating much on his birthday, but I can say as someone who saw and briefly met the Jacksons on Barbaro's birthday at Deleware Park, they were celebrating his life and legacy.

Remember Barbaro's running in the Derby; remember his fight to live; and remember him for him.

(Starlight1, as an aside to a previous question we answered, no, I was not "forgetting" the Pac. Rim nations that eat horse meat. I was trying to be a bit concise and make a point without putting in every single detail. I am very much aware of the PMU problem. I wasn't ignoring it either, again, just trying to be precise. You made an eloquent case for the end of PMU, a cause that I am in 100% agreement with you on.

And to Kathy M.: I am not moved "only by emotion." I realize that is a compicated issue, but for you to assume that all of these "silly emotional activists" don't have answers to your questions, you're sadly mistaken. A large number of these "silly emotional activists" are horse owners. And no one I know is saying that there is no alternative, if the horse is too old, injured, insane, etc. then by all means HUMANELY EUTHANIZE it. That's what people should do with the slaughterhouses closed.)

  5. I only wish that he had lived to see it. I feel for you, Melissa- I know only too well what it means to watch horses you love die. I have been there once too often myself to have any illusions anymore about how painful it is. To GREG: ( the other answerer to this question) Knock off the slurs, will you- this is someone who is young and happens to have loved Barbaro very much, just like many millions of other Americans. This is a sad day for many of us- yes, we are looking forward to the running of the Derby again next week, but we are also remembering what was- and what might have been. Melissa, I hope you can take some comfort from the thought that there are some of us ( including Barbaro's human family) who are grieving as much as you are. He is in better place- and I have no doubt that he's having a blast running free on Heaven's pastures and meadows. This was a horse that really loved to run- and I will never forget the way he pricked up his ears and sped up coming off the final turn in the Derby last year. The last horse I can remember that did that was Seattle Slew- and he went on to greatness. So hold up your heart- and remember, this won't last forever. The pain will ease after a while. Good luck.

  6. Get over it! He's dead! And he was a friggin' horse! He wouldn't even have known it was his birthday if he was alive! Why are you so attached?

  7. Melissa there was a fantastic celebration of Barbaro's life today at Delaware Park. Here is a link to the story from The Bloodhorse: http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp...

Like I have said before I have Barbaro as my screensaver, and he is never far from my thoughts. Don't pay any mind to what some people said here, you are entitled to feel any darn thing you want to! I watched the clip of Barbaro's baby brother, what a joy he will be!

The Barbaro special is supposed to air again this Friday night. I'm not sure which channels will be carrying it though, just keep an eye on the listings for Friday night.

Happy birthday Barbaro, may you rest in peace.

  8. He was an awesome horse. I love him!  And I believe that he WOULD have the triple crown trophy if he didn't get hurt in the Preakness Stakes.I miss him and I wonder if his two brothers(Niconar and the youngest one of which I don't know the name) would be as good as Barbaro and if they will carry on Barbaro's legacy??

  9. I am very sad.  On ESPN when they showed all the posters and stuff, mine was the biggest one and they put it on TV!  I loved that horse.  I just wish they collected s***n from him before because I would put my mare in foal right away!  I wish he never raced that race.

  10. well since the horse was put down, I don't think the owners or the horse will be celebrating a lot of anything.
