Question:

So are all branches of the military required to meet in Lackland, Texas for basic military training?

I just started considering the military recently and have had most of my questions answered but I still have a few more that seemingly pop up. I was just curious if all branches(Navy, AF, Marines, Army, CG) did basic training together? Also I keep reading that alot of militants did their training in Lackland, TX but here in my home state(TN) Ft. Campbell is an hour away. So would I still have to train in Lackland or Ft. Campbell? Or is Ft. Campbell just for stationed troops and no training?

  1. All the branches have their own basic training sites. They all have a different # of sites and different ways of splitting up who goes where.

    Air Force:

6.5 weeks @ Lackland Air Force Base (Texas)

    Coast Guard:

8 weeks @ Cape May Coast Guard Training Center (New Jersey)

    Navy:

8 weeks @ Great Lakes Recruit Training Depot (Illinois)

    Army:

9 weeks @ either Fort Benningn (Georgia), Fort Jackson (South Carolina), Fort Knox (Kentucky), Fort Leonard Wood (Missouri), or Fort Sill (Oklahoma)

    Marines:

13 weeks @ MCRD San Diego (California) or MCRD Parris Island (South Carolina)

  2. The Navy has one, Great Lakes.  The Air Force has one, Lackland. The Marine Corps has two: Parris Island and San Diego.(1)

While the Air Force only has one location for basic training, the Army has several, including Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina; Fort Knox in Louisville, Kentucky; Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Missouri; Fort; and Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. Where you attend is primarily dependent upon the location of your follow-on, Advanced Individual Training (Job Training). In fact, if you enlist in one of the Combat Arms MOS's, you very well may receive basic training and Advanced Individual Training all at one location: Fort Benning for infantry; Fort Knox for armor; Fort Leonard Wood for combat engineers, military police, and chemical.(2)

    Hope this helps you.

  3. All branches of the military do not train in Texas. Each individual branch has their own central training location for every division of the United States and depending on where you live and which branch of the military you decide to go in determines where you do your basic training.

  4. Coast Guard basic is in Cape May, NJ

  5. To answer your question, No all branches do not conduct basic training together.

The Navy has only one Basic Training Facility.... Great Lakes Recruit training command Chicago Illinois

  6. The Army has several bases used for basic training and for AIT, none which include Lackland AFB. The base in which a soldier trains depends on his/her MOS. There is no basic training at Fort Campbell. The basic training bases are Fort Benning, GA, Fort Jackson, SC, Fort Leonardwood, MO , Fort Sill, OK and Fort Knox, KY.

  7. Just wanted to point out that Army females go to basic at either Leonardwood or Jackson. All the others are Male only.

AIT (Job Training) may be at another service's base, like signal intell or firefighter, both that train at Goodfellow AFB. But do go to another service's base you train only with your unit. They tend not to mix services (Excluding Navy, Coast Guard and Marines, who do train together sometimes) in training because of different regulations.
