Which pillar of religious moral dogma do the following stem from:

Witch trials with innumerable people killed (Height of ignorance from a Divine source of 'enlightenment" and cruelty of the highest order)

The Inquisition

9/11

---

Religion has led to multiple mass murders and it never seems to end... and even today we empower the same institutions that have simply deprived children of parents and parents of children.

What is it in the lack of belief (atheism) that might drive people to mass murder people?

Nothing.

Your thoughts.

  1. That about 30% of Americans are illiterate and only maybe 5% read for leisure. Yet they all watch tv and the God fearing bunch go to church. So they are a direct product of their own environment. Which I would state has quite an agenda. Pretty much what I think.

They choose not to investigate other religions and theologies by choice yes. But the rest is so out of their hands. The levels of mental reinforcement are so that you can say whatever you want, any way you want, and often people just don't get it.

  2. Yeah I see a lime kitty on the road and I don't break.

    Cold hearted Atheist.

I see the irony though. You see the irony. People all over the world see the irony. There are a just a few religious people who think they are without sin or something.

  3. In the name of religious morality we deny two people in love the right to be married, share assets, be treated as family members and this is just the latest in a line of discriminatory actions.

As far as I can tell there is nothing in my "atheist morality" that would cause me or another to discriminate, incite terrorist actions, or generate other violent actions.

  4. Atheism means no higher  moral authority.  No one to answer to.  Do as you feel and then whatever it is that you do, call it moral.

  5. Check out my question about cultural evolution. I think I pretty much cover it, but I'd be glad to add more if you so request.

  6. Um. While I agree with you, where is the question? It's kind of hard to see in the ranting.

In my opinion, mass murders are the result of crazy people, not beliefs.

  7. There is no evidence in human history that a group of atheists banded together and mass-murdered an organized religious group. The opposite, however, has occurred, and recorded, time after time, unto the present - genocide in the "sacred" name of their god or god-man. The organized followers of the monotheistic religions of Islam and Christianity, for starters, stand accused of these atrocities, and are found guilty beyond doubt. Their religions are morally bankrupt.

  8. they have morals...they are based on what society tells them...but by themselves no...they don't...

Salem witch trials...17 people were killed...its not that hard to count...

Stalin...killed 20 million to create a society without religion...i guess those morals are better for you...

  9. Enlightenment has had positive influence but it failed in the sense that in the last 100 years we still have genocide caused and enabled by people who follow people who kill due to race or ideology. Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin and almost all other wars are not due to Theistic conflict.

    So ....

Does Reason give you enough comfort to sleep at night that social evolution will ensure that the best of human qualities will prevail ?

  10. I've always attempted to get this argument into the public discourse, but to no avail.

Which group of people, organized under a common belief system has never, I repeat NEVER, been the cause of mass killings, genocide, warfare, etc.?

And before anyone cries foul on me...don't confuse Communist governments with Atheists and try to drop Stalin and Tiananmen Square on our shoulders. That was governmental behavior, not atheistic.j

Yep, the atheists in the world are the only ones who should consider themselves free to throw stones, but interestingly enough that isn't really part of our agenda. We, unlike our believing brethren, tend to keep to ourselves and actually follow the tenet of live and let live.

  11. Most Christians cite the Stalinist purges as killing in the name of atheism. Except it wasn't in the name of atheism, yes Stalin was an atheist, and the Soviet regime was secular in nature. But all of those killings were made because of paranoia and a paranoid political doctrine.

  12. "Good people will do good things,

Evil people will do evil things,

but religion allows Good people to do Evil things"

People equate Atheism with a lack of morality; after all they seem to be only moral from doing the things the sky fairy tells them to do or not to do. But if that were true, why are they not stoning people on a daily basis?

I'll tell you why, because the secular free thinkers who established the laws of this country knew better, and it had nothing to do with religion.
