Someone made a comment about a horse with bad confirmation will just end up in Canada. Curious about peoples feelings on that. I think it had something to do with the fact that the US closed its meat plants so now Canada is in the hot seat for the industry. One that isn't new and is only being spot lighted because the US shut theres down. Its not like we just started up some meat plants.

But anyway, I'm a Canadian horse lover who doesn't agree with a meat plant per say but it serves some. Also, FYI, horses sent for meat that aren't marked as "For Meat Only" can be purchased. So its not like once they get there they aren't rescueable.

  1. it is not just, as you say, the ugly horses, that go to canada.  Because of the Animal rights activists, the horses that are labled "Dangerous" or older horses that can't be given care, are traveling longer distances into Canada and Mexico.  There is no market for horses here since the closing of the slaughterhouses,  owners who can't take care of their horse, try to sell them.  With no market for horses, you can't even give them away.  ( I was asked a couple times if I wanted a free horse, I didn't have the room.)  you could pay for a vet to put them down "humanely"  and pay someone to take the body.  or you could sell them to a meat market and they would kill the horse quick and easy.

when the vet has to put them down, they give them a shot that puts them to "sleep".  The horse then struggles and gasps for air.  When it dies, it is painfull to watch, I wonder what they feel.

At a slaughterhouse, they don't get the chance to feel pain and it is quick and easy.

  2. Canada is just the default location people come up with for slaughter. It is not true that horses with bad confirmation go to slaughter either. Its the owners that refuse to suck it up and do what it right for the horse: euthanize it if it needs it or find it a freaking home. Yeah the market is bad but do what is right for the horse.

I think Mexico is the worst for slaughter. Do you know how they kill them. It makes slaughter in Canada seem kind.

check out http://www.tbfriends.com/ (these horses would have otherwise gone to Canada) and http://fuglyhorseoftheday.blogspot.com/ (FHOTD comments on bad breeding and slaughter as well as some other stuff...)

  3. I am assuming that you are right in your assumption.  I was very shocked to find out that the US did this practice up until just recently.  I find it totally disgusting and cannot understand why anyone would want to eat horse.  Granted, vegans out there can say the same thing about cows.  I live and drive past a slaughter house everyday and when I see the trucks come in with the cattle I want to cry.  I know I still eat steak ....but that's that.

  4. I really dont know. But good luck finding out
