So how do you get to those groups which requires age verification?

You just ask to join the group.  

I HOPE Yahoo keeps those underage from joining age restricted (adult) groups.  When one sets up a group they can make it an adult group.

There has been an issue in the past for those who run such groups and to show a "good faith effort" many require that a user show their age on their Yahoo profile.  Of course this means someone could lie but it is an attempt on the part of the owner/moderator.

Like Chrisrob pointed out, children can lie about their age. I could be 7 years old or 39 for all anyone know. I find age verification a joke. But, there is that 1% chance that a child would feel intimidated and believe they will get caught and not enter the group so kudos to Yahoo for the option.
