I'm having a cup of English Breakfast Tea...to wash down the 2nd half of my choc. muffin, and I'm wondering...is it called English Breakfast Tea in England. Or is it just Breakfast Tea, or am I drinking a scam and they just call it that here in the US and it's not even English at all?

What is the difference between English and British. They seem to be used somewhat interchangeably, but I really am not sure. I don't want to offend anyone.

Calling Little Red Birds and Adorable Chocolate Labs to clear this up for me! Thanks!

  1. same thing...

  2. We do have English Breakfast tea here, Twinings is pretty good.

Britain includes England, Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland. Anyone from these countries could call themselves British.

I call myself English because I was born and raised in England.

  3. I have the same questions but about French toast if I go to France or Mexico does it change?  Do I ask for French toast while in France or would they get offended? If I go to Mexico and ask for Mexican beans will they get offended?

I heard this one--two guys from Mexico, they entered a restaurant and they said give us two Chillies Rellenos (Large Hot Chillies stuffed with some kind of filling) and at a nearby table were two Chilean guys, when they heard this, they asked for two Mexican Rellenos (there is no such plate)

  4. i think it is all the same tea.some prepared different than others.

  5. Oh lumme... I don't know!!!

YORKISHIRE TEA IS THE ONLY ALL WEATHER ALL SEASON ALL BREAKFAST TEA!!

(How was that for advertising?) :D

English is just England (no Scotland, Wales etc) Britain is the whole of the UK (so this includes Scotland etc) and the UK is everything on our Island, all the countries together as one. I think, at least!

Sorry J I've failed! Must be the eyebrow... :)

    Neither... I'm UKish! ;-)

In all seriousness... British I'd say, just depends on the weather I guess! Good Q.. I'll start making a tally of each one I say haha.

  6. Breakfast tea is called the same in Britain, it's really just a name for a stronger type tea, higher in caffeine, stronger in flavour. To give you a boost in the morning.

English refers to England exclusively, and Britain to the country's that make up Great Britain, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern (occupied) Ireland.

In Empire times English and British were fully interchangeable terms, today using England/lish is considered politically incorrect when referring to Britain as a whole,

  7. Great Britain refers to England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland as an whole.

England is just England. That's me English.

We just call it Breakfast Tea, it tends to be a bit stronger, but I just drink Yorkshire Tea, which is quite strong anyway.

I like my Yorkshire Tea with Costco's cranberry muffins, a mixture of the US and the UK.

Edit...yes British refers to all four places, but I class myself as English, because I'm from England.

Your right it is our tea time, we always have a late tea, it's 7. 40pm here.

  8. Yes, there's English breakfast tea in England too.

Great Britain is an island consisting of Scotland, England and Wales.  So if something is English, it's from England, but if something is British, it could be from England, Scotland or Wales (or Northern Ireland).
