In which order do i register, inspect, and update the title?

I just bought the car for $1 and she signed the title over to me. I haven't updated it yet.

The car has some rust and a cracked windshield. When do i inspect it? Do i fix these before inspection?

Registration. When do i register it? I do that at town/city hall right? After its registered I can drive it right?

  1. You can't take it for inspection until you have the title changed over into your name and the plates (registration). I would advise fixing the windshield before inspection since most States will fail you for it. Also make sure all lights and the horn work. You MAY have a problem with the $1 selling price unless it is someone in your immediate family. States don't like losing tax dollars due to incorrect sale prices. They could make you pay tax on the Blue Book value.

  2. Since the rules for such things vary by location, you might want to give some kind of a clue where you are if you really want an answer.
