my other account was suspended because nobody liked my answers lol.

anyways, my horse is Tori, the one ive been posting pics up of all the time.

anywhoser, im gonna ride her tomorrow, and its gonna be bareback.

we dont have a saddle or bridle yet.

so im just gonna get two lead ropes and click one to one end of the halter, and the other on the other side.

when i ride her, and i want her to turn right, will she know what im asking?

like, if i pull gently on the right, will she still feel the pressure even though she doesnt have a bit?

thank you!

  1. If she is trained to be neck reined then all you should have to do is just lay the rope on the right side of her neck without tugging at all. I guess you'll find out. LOL

  2. You should really be more prepared before you bring the horse home and before you decide to get on.  I didn't have a saddle when I first brought my horse home... which is fine, I wanted to "bond" before I started riding him.  BUT someone else I know, had the same idea as you (without my blessing or approval) and my dead broke horse bucked the person off.  Yet, when you put a saddle on him with a correct bridle, he's fine.  so beware before you try bareback... not all horses are willing.

Got your email.... I misread you... I just assumed that you were not ready for the horse.  My mistake.  But like I said... I didn't have the saddle and bridle at first either. Anyway, if the horse is used to riding bareback... that should answer your own question.  That is really awesome that your horse is willing/taught to do bareback.

  3. ya

u used to ride my horse like that all the time.

its almost just like using a snaffle bit.

some horses respond better to that kind of pressure then the bit

  4. she'll know

  5. i think you should just work her on the lunge line to get to know how she works. if i bought a horse i would not ride for a couple weeks until i got to know her. I think that you should wait until you are with your trainer and with a saddle and bridle. I agree that for your own good, you should wait that could be extremely dangerous.

p.s. it is nothing like a snaffle bit, with a halter and two lead ropes it is like a hackamore, no bit... a snaffle BIT is a BIT which goes in their MOUTH

  6. What you need first is a good vet book.  You are now responsible for a living creature.  Have fun and enjoy yourself.

  7. you may or may not be OK depending on the horse's level of training and her disposition.

some horses do not like to be ridden bareback unless they have been exposed to it.  some horses don't do well when ridden in halters.

it sounds like you have  extremely limited experience, and it further sounds like you are asking for an accident.

if I were you, I'd stay off of that horse until you can get some lessons and some tack.

since I know you aren't going to heed that advice, I would work with the mare on the ground first.  Make sure you can stand back by her belly and gently pull on that "rein/leadrope" and get her to pull her nose around.  apply light pressure to her hip and see if you can get her hip to disengage.  if you can do those two things, you might be OK.

but do us all (and yourself) a favor and go get some lessons before you get hurt.

  8. She should know. I would just ride in an enclosed area..

  9. Not all horses are tollerant of bareback riding and many more wont be ridden in a halter. They just dont like it. She might also try to take advantage of your lack of control and refuse to stop/go/turn.

I ride my OTTB in a halter with a lead line and no saddle all the time and he is normally fine. One day a couple weeks ago he took advantage of my limited control and took off. Being an ex-race horse he can really move and can keep it up for long distances without a problem. I couldnt slow him, turn him or even begin to stop him. This was with a horse I know everything about and have ridden bareback extensivly.

She should turn if you ask her like that but you never know for sure. I would really hold off on riding till you have the proper gear. Especially on a new horse that you dont have a background on. You are setting the both of you up for a bad start.
