  1. Being an Army combat medic (68W) will give you more experience as an EMT and You can be EMT certified while on active duty!

  2. Hi! First off, seeing you are a male, going to the Navy is better than the Coast Guard.

Better opportunities, training, benefits and the HM field is opened to males so most likely you will get what you want in the Navy.

    Here's a description of HM: http://extensis.cnrc.navy.mil/factsheets...

    http://extensis.cnrc.navy.mil/factsheets...

Also I would like you to head on over to http://www.mynavyonline.com Im KJC88 there. It's a Navy community with retired, active, reserves, DEPer sailors and parents who know heaps of information on any questions you wish to ask. Introduce yourself and ask all you want, also read all information on ratings (jobs), boot camp, A school, etc. It's better than asking all these yahooians, we give you facts, not just our personal opinions.

    Good luck Sailor!

  3. well i dont know about the navy, but the coast guard doesnt offer EMT as a rating, so if your joining a branch souly to be an EMT you must be aware that it will only be a part time thing in the coast guard.

and the coast guard IS military.

  4. neither branch has EMTs in the civilian sense.

HM (Navy) is overmanned and closed completely to females.  males are not shipping out for nine months at times.

have you taken the ASVAB yet to see if you even qualify?

  5. The Coast Guard IS part of the US Military and has it's own academy even. The military doesn't use the term EMT. It's called Medic in the Army and Corpsman in the Navy and Coasties. The CG will go out into weather that would scare the Navy right out of their "Tidie Whities". The first link I posted is CG Mission Statement. It'll tell you more than I can here. The second link is the USCG site. And the third is the USCG Academy. I've included some sites that may get you started NOW to get you where you what to go. Good Luck and Thank You for wanting to service our country.

  6. Both the Navy and the Coast Guard have Corpsmen, not EMT's.  IF you join the Navy as Corpsman your assignments can range from Navy Branch Clinics, Navy Hospitals, Sea Duty on any ship, if you're a senior Corpsman and complete Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC) training, you can be assigned to a smaller ship, where they have no Doctor, as an IDC or you could get Fleet Marine Force duty, in which case you work with the Marines.  Not too sure what all the duties of a Corpsman are in the Coast Guard, but I'd imagine that you'd be busy in Search and Rescue operations, and get a lot of work in disaster relief efforts.

  7. The Coast Guard is not the military.  It is in the Department of Homeland Security.

The Navy has a medical unit with doctors, nurses and medics.  The Coast Guard for the most part does not have a medical unit as their care is provided by the US Public Health Service (which is also a uniformed service by the way) so your options as an EMT are more limited in the Coast Guard.

I would say go with the Navy as you have far more opportunities to be a medic/EMT than with the Coast Guard.
