Does that mean:

1. Only those who live in Japan technically can make manga/anime?

2. If you live elsewhere it's just called cartoons?

3. If spongebob was made in Japan, would it be considered anime?

Sorry, I'm just a little confused on what makes manga/anime different from other styles of cartoons.

  1. 1. Yes. There are some americans that make 'anime' but it's really not the same. Like compare Totally Spies or Mystery Hunters to Neon Genesis Evangelion.

    2. Yes. Like, totally spies, it's drawn like an 'anime' but it really isn't. You can tell it's american by watching it. I have a hard time explaining the exact difference lol.

    3. No. Spongebob doesn't have an anime-like plot, and it's not drawn the way all animes are drawn.

    I hope this helps

  2. If a manga/anime originates in Japan, it is considered manga/anime.  If it originates elsewhere, it is not anime.  Shows that have a similar style as real anime, but originate in the U.S. or Canada (Teen Titans and Totally Spies, for example) are often referred to as amerime.

    Anime is not strictly a "style" of animation.  It refers to animation for a particular region of the world.  But since all anime comes from the same general region, it has a distinctive style... largely because that is the style that's popular in the region.

    And yes, if SpongeBob were a Japanese cartoon, it would be considered anime.  Although if Spongebob came from Japan, the show would likely be vastly different from what it is.  Most japanese animated shows have a plot... not 11 minute episodes that can be watched in any order.

  3. Anime, by the Japanese meaning of the word, refers to animation in general, regardless of its country of origin. This means that Spiderman is anime, Spongebob is anime, and so is Wallace and Gromit. Why? Because "anime" is just another word for animation.

    After westerners got ahold of the word, it also came to specifically to animation originating in Japan and cartoons drawn with their aesthetic. But the original Japanese meaning of the word is more accurate by far. Either way, the word has more than one meaning.

    Also, Totally Spies isn't from America. It's French.

    In addition to this, there is no such thing as an "anime type plot." Stereotyping is bad. Both Japanese and Western animations come in a variety of flavors.

    2 --> Yes

    3 --> No
