im 15 years old and music is like my obsession. So i decided i wanted to go and buy a guitar... but I actually all ready have a mini electric guitar from a couple years ago, when i first tried lessons (my teacher was some creep who cared more about photography and magic tricks then teaching me so my dad made me quit). But now that i am older, he is letting me continue lessons, but i dont know if i should just get a full sized guitar to learn on when i start lessons again or get a mini. Either way i need a new guitar because i want a acoustic this time. Im 15 and about 5 foot 5. Any advice?

  1. I would recommend an acoustic/electric guitar. These guitars can be played plugged in or not plugged in. I have two. I would also say that since I don't know really what music you like, I'll sort of break it down.

an acoustic or A/E should have a solid top or soundboard, rosewood bridge & fretboard.

There BASICALLY two types of acoustic guitars, one employs the Torres design invented in the 1800's and is usually a classical nylon stringed guitar. This design has a fan shaped bracing under the soundboard. The other is the Martin design also invented in the 1800's. It has a CROSS shaped brace under the soundboard. Both designs where originally used with animal intestine strings. As steel was used more and more in the late 1800's the cross was strengthened to accept steel strings and the other still used goat gut until after WWII when nylon was available.

The classical today is used for classical, jazz, flamenco.  The steel strings are more for rock n roll, folk, jazz, country.  I would recommend a OM body style steel string or an classical guitar. A dreadnaught or jumbo body may be too big to be comfortable for you. The OM is smaller and the classical is smaller.  The classical nylon string will be less harsh on your fingers.  This is an example of both, although the steel string is a dreadnaught body and not the OM I recommended.

  2. Hey,

At 5'5, get a full size like a Takamine with a single cutaway. They are not too big and have a beautiful finish, a nice soft sound and a very good action.

The guitar is well set at the factory and is low maintenance. By that I mean that it will hold its tuning and no need to fool around with the action and truss rod.

    It sells for $150 max...

  3. When you're that old, definitely go for the full size unless you have really teeny hands. I started full size when I was 10. You might need to adjust a little, but you could still buy a full size with a thinner neck, etc. Full sizers almost always get nicer tone, too. Just try them out before you buy it! Sound and playability are much more important than looks.

    Good luck =)

  4. if you want a good sounding acoustic that wont drain your wallet check out

    Starcaster by Fender

Ibanez(they make a 3/4 scale version of some of their acoustics so it might be easier on your fingers)

    Alvarez

    Mitchell

  5. well i would recomend just taking your time in finding the sound you want and test out a few guitars to see if they fit fine with you as in make sure you feel comfortable and fine with the guitar so how big you get it should depend on how you feel with it but now i think im saying that to much but one last thing i think you should ask an employee for help and things but thats basicly all i can recomend hope this helps

    God Bless
