  1. Both are very good (I've owned both brands) -- right now I have a Thule with the Hullaport padded J-rack which is a piece of cake to load even the longest and heaviest boats (and as an average sized woman loading a 16' 60# sea kayak this is a big factor.)  The Yakima Hullraiser is pretty much the same -- in fact I just got a notice from EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) that they have a big Labor Day sale right now on both Thule and Yakima and their price on the Yakima Hullraiser can't be beat right now -- I think it is under $75 (plus extra for the basic rack, of course).

I sort of prefer the Thule because the rack has square bars instead of round, which makes it easier to strap and haul things like skiis and ladders and it also seems stronger to me (this is probably an illusion).  You should browse both catalogs and see which one has the attachments you would most likely use in the future.

PS  I notice that the "answer" below has simply cut and pasted part of my response.  I guess plagiarism is a cheap way to earn himself points.

  3. I like Thule, but they are both good.  Enjoy your kayak!
