I would have to say an emphatic NO! NO! NO! If you watch the news even once this week it will probably strongly make you see how unsafe hitchhiking is now-a-days!

if you're going a long distance, try getting a job at a car rental agency as a transport person. Some cars get rented in one state and dropped off in another and need to be driven back.

Take the bus or walk.

Ask a friend for a ride.

Buy a car.
