Question:

So is there a new NASCAR rule that if you don't say you made a penalty then you don't get a penalty?

This question is in reference to Denny Hamlin staying out and bringing out the caution intentionally. This article http://www.nascar.com/2008/news/opinion/05/07/dcaraviello.dhamlin.made.a.mistake/index.html on NASCAR.COM states that Jr was fined and docked points for his intentional bringing out the caution. The only difference is is Jr said it over the radio.

Is it a penalty just for Jr or is it a penalty for anyone else?

  1. It wouldn't be the stupidest rule in nascar... unfortunately

  2. Yep, welcome to NASCAR. Where the rules are the rules, unless your this weeks favorite.

The only difference is that Jr. ADMITTED OVER THE RADIO that he intentionally brought out the yellow, then again to the press.

Hamlin wasn't that stupid. He said he didn't know, and was just trying to get to pit road.

He was parked for 2 laps. But they should have sat him for the rest of the race. Waltrip got parked for "aggressive driving". Forgive me, but I thought that you had to be aggressive to be in this sport.

I bet it's Vince McMahon in a Helton mask running things.

  3. I guess the best thing to do is lie then and pretend you didn't do anything wrong!

In my opinion, Denny got away with what he did. He would have gone down two laps regardless. By the time he would have made it to his pit, and got his tire fixed, he would have gone down two laps. (short track) So, it was like NASCAR didn't hand him a penalty at all.

Maybe they were scared to do it because it was Denny's home state, and if they booted the hometown hero for the rest of the race, it would have caused a riot or more empty seats next time there.

  4. The reason Jr was fined and docked points is that NASCAR learned that he intentionally spun the car to bring out a caution after the race was complete.  If that was known during the race, he probably would have been held for a couple of laps.  As for Hamlin, by holding him on pit road for two laps, he fell down in the running order costing him points and money.  So the penalty is essentially the same, just that Jr's was given his post race, while Hamlin received his during the race.

If Hamlin wasnt penalized two laps, he probably would have finished in 17th.  Therefore he lost 21 points because of the penalty.

  5. They didn't fine because Toyota is the one lining their pockets right now.

  6. Nascar's idiotic logic is Hamlin led the most laps and was expecting to win so the flat and pit penalty are punishment enough.

He should be fined 25 points

  7. He was penalized. If you noticed the replay, he intentionally stopped on the track and as soon as the yellow came out drove to pit road. was he penalized as heavily as Jr. NO he was not, if i remember correctly he was held for a lap in the pits.

  8. I agree! Same thing with the incident last Saturday night where Waltrip pushed Mears down the track after they wrecked and the caution came out. Mikey got parked for the rest of the race.

Last year Ted Musgrave did the same exact thing in the truck series and not only got parked for the remainder of that race, but was suspended for the next six races!!

    GO FIGURE!!!

Nascar has no consistency in the way they hand out penalties! It makes the sport look like the WWE!!

  9. NASCAR does have some crazy rules and not always fair, that is for sure.  But they did penalize Denny 2 laps for intentionally bringing out a caution.  No it wasn't as stiff as Junior's penality.  It probably was like you stated Junior admitted it and Denny didn't.
