jacksonville florida. what do you know about there? is it a safe city and what is the safest area? i was already doing a little apartment searching a while ago and found 2 apartments that sound pretty good from the ratings. lakewood village apartments, and the oaks at st. johns. also.. is it possible to get your apartment before you even get there.. or do you HAVE to be there in person. because i want to make sure i have a place to go to right away when we get there. this will be the first time i am even leaving my parents home so im nervous but also excited at the same time. and i just want to make sure we go somewhere nice and safe. any help, info or advice is great. thanks.

sorry this is so long.

  1. You should be married to him before you move, otherwise if something goes wrong, you get no benefits because you arte not his spouse. Also,if you have dated a yr or so then he should marry you,if less than a year, then you do not know him well enough to go off living with him in some strange place where you will not know anyone and are hrs or days away from family.

I have not heard good things about Jacksonville, try looking up the crime rate there.

You really need to think this over.

You do not know how he will be under stress living with him and if he has been living with his parents til not, then how will he handle the new responsibilities?

What kind of work is there and what kind of skills do you have?

    There's a LOT to consider.

I am betting your parents are not for this.

  2. Florida is HOT and if he is moving because of the navy there a base to live at...

I spent many years in florida and Jacksonville was a nice city but can't pinpoint the nicer areas...

  3. Chances are he will live in barracks while he is in school..Dont move yet.

  4. Just because he is finished with schooling doesn't mean that he automatically can live off base. In order to live off base the AD member must be E5 and above or E4 with more than 4 years in.  Below that it has to be approved by the command in order to receive BAH (Housing allowance) and if barracks are available that is where he will be.  You can live out in town yourself but you will not be allowed to get on base without a military ID and as a gf you will not get one.   He can pay his rent out of his pay but it isn't that much as a single person usually around $500 a payday.  That won't cover many expenses.  Then you have to think about a vehicle do you have one? Does he?  How much will the insurance be because Florida has some of te highest insurance rates in the US and those under 25 pay way more.   Then there is mileage for him getting to work each day.  Jax can be horrible sometimes for traffic especially down around NAS Jax if that is where he is going.  Or is he going to NS Mayport which is quite far away.

You will also have to move yourself there so do you have the means to do that?  Do you have enough money to pay 2 months rent, utilities sign up?

If you wait then he can go in advance, save up his pay and so can you.  If you then decide to get married the orders can be changed and they might move your things..He can find some areas to live in that are decent.
