So nervous about high school tryouts!

So I am going to be a freshman & i'm trying out for the volleyball team. Tryouts are on Monday-Friday. I am SOO nervous. I've never had tryouts before, because I went to a small private school, and you were either on V or JV. I was on V every year except for my first [5th grade]. I am a pretty good player [got MVP twice] & can serve really well, bump, and spike pretty good, but I can't set. I'm horrible at it. I've been practicing it a lot, but I just cant seem to get it.

Do you have any tips on getting better at setting, how tryouts are going to go, and what to do at tryouts to help me make the team.

Thanks! =]

  1. Try getting a volleyball, and set it to a wall. It'll richoet off the wall back to you, and you keep on setting it over and over.. Tryouts the coach will usually do the regular warm-ups, peppering, bump, serve, set, and spike routine.. Just do whatever the coach asks you to do. Be relax.. Just remember that in the end, it is just a game.. Whether you make it or not.

  2. It sounds like you will do fine, unless you are trying out for a really really good team. But any way just relax play your best. Always be positive. Couches love when if you mess up you don't get down on yourself. Look at what you did wrong and fix it. Don't get upset if you do a few things wrong just fix it. And about the setting, I don't know what your team does for line up but most of the time you wont need to set. There should be other people that the couch can pick from to set. Although it is good to know how to just in case something happens to the set you can step up. So just ask your parents if there is a place on the house of garage that you could continuously set the ball. And just keep setting it. If your parents dont want you to do it against the house then you could try and just control the ball by setting it into the air to yourself then get under the ball again and keep doing that.

  3. go back to basics, and do excersices that will help you with your form, accuracy, and strength in your fingers. Once you can do those with consistent accuracy then you can move on to doing the real thing. When you start doing the real deal start off slowly so you can work on accuracy and form.

  4. why do you need to set lol? im sure you will have a designated setter on your team unless your like my school and your girls team is not organized at all. (i suggest trying to practice with the guys team because most girls teams just play vball to be with their friends  and not to actually compete. at least thats how it is in NY) our guys team went 17-2 and our girls team was 3-14

  5. Ok, you sound like you have had a lot of experience with volleyball. That's great!

    With your setting, all i can say is keep your wrists bent (keep the little crinkles in your wrist while setting. Like when you put your hands on your hips and then bring them up), keep your fingers curved like the ball, and when you set, have your hands go straight in the air like your soaring or something. That's what i've been doing and it seems like it's been helping.

    The night before tryouts, you should eat a big dinner with a lot of carbs, like pasta. You should get A LOT of sleep, and just KEEP CALM. I found out that being nervous ruins a lot of things.

    I hope this helped. I know im not good at explaining, but i hope you make the team and good luck!

    Oh yeah, when your setting do the footwork.

    A little hop with your left foot first, then your right. :)

  6. You're just like me!!! I went to a small private school too and played volleyball. I was soooo nervous too. Now I am going to be a senior and I look at all the incoming freshman, I'm also the varsity setter. Coaches always look for a coachable player (do not back talk, that really pisses them off). They also look for loud and team player. Call the ball alot and communicate on the court and give alot of high fives and words of encouragement. Coaches love that. Always give all your effort especially drills involving running, they hate slackers and people whom give up really easily. Be aggressive with the ball and don't let it hit the ground, they'll see that you took the extra effort to get the ball- THAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT SOOO MUCH.

    Now with setting- it is one of the hardest things to do so don't worry. At try outs, don't pay attention to the mistakes that you make, just show them that you are trying. (don't sigh too much). before setting, your hands should be in the shape of a coffee can, then moose antlers at your forehead (thumbs should be pointed twards you forehead, then superman (extend your hand out like super man) That's what i used to say: coffee can, moose antlers, superman! try setting above your head several times for practice and if possible with a partner. Don't worry JUST GIVE IT YOUR ALL!!! good luck

  7. if u got the basics like serving and bumping, oh and also spiking(awesome thing to have!) and u just have to master setting that will be super easy. to get ur hand ready, just put them around ur waist and use that hand formation with ur elbows out. set to urself or a wall.

    practice pepper (bump, set, spike with a partner) for tryouts it helps a lot!

                   GOOD LUCK!!!=)
