  1. MAC address isn't enough to trace the culprit.  If the owner of the router was VERY savvy, and very lucky, they could use a network sniffer to watch the traffic from the thief and try to see something that would give them a clue - email address, some info. in a text file, etc.

But then again, that guy wouldn't have an unsecured WIFI connection, would he?

    Steal away!

  2. It's pretty difficult to determine an exact location of a wi-fi connection, but the person with the sending computer could look at their network connection, and they would most likely see another computer accessing their wi-fi, which they then might put restrictive passwords on the network.

  3. They just type their IP Address in to the search bar and that will bring up their router settings and then you can see who is connected to your router..i've done it and it worked

  4. Well they kind of have to know what they are doing but it isn't too tough.  If they're idiots you don't have to worry about it.  But odds are you have a shared documents folder that you are sharing to the network.  This is trouble, because when they go to my network places, it will say (lets say your name is Jane) Jane's Shared Documents.  If they don't know who you are you probably don't have to worry, but I guess there's a possibility that you have you last name on there too.

  5. If you are stealing another's wireless network, you are violating the law and can be caught.

If the owner monitors his equipment he can determine all who are on down to the MAC address.  With this info, he can then trace the MAC to the owner and pursue legal action.

Most home owners do not know this and do not understand what to do.  Actually if they used a little common sense, they would lock down their wireless and keep freeloaders off which is a lot easier to do than trace down violators.

Hacking in is illegal and irresponsible.  However, the chances of being caught and prosecuted are small.

Those who claim wireless owner should install security are as accurate as those who claim the hacker should not hack in in the first place.  However, I tell people that stealing from someone who leaves his garage unlocked is just as illegal as is stealing the same thing from someone with a locked garage - the locking only made it harder.

If you have morals and ethics you will not hack in.

  6. Id say nearly impossible for someone to notice. No one is really that anal about their wifi connection. No one just sits on their computer and checks their connection to see if anyone else is using it. If they have a password on their connection and you just happened to somehow figure out their password then its even harder for you to get caught because most people don think about having their connection stolen so u should be fine :)

  7. I've been leeching for years and I don't believe it's possible man.  Unless they are an IT administrator lol.
