HI, i went on vacation to a ranch in montana. Anyways while i was there i rode a 15 year old quarter horse mare named Allister. We must have rode together in the last 4 days for about 18 hours. She is so amazing. Anyways I fell in love with her.

I am wondering, how much do you think it would cost to to transport a horse from southern montana to california?

Also do you think Allister would be depressed if she left all of her buddies at the ranch she is at now?

Do you think she could adjust to the weather?

she is VERY strong, but where she lives it gets very cold, and where i live it never snows.

Geez why am i always the one to fall in love with a horse. Just my luck that when on my last day at the ranch they said she is for sale for 1500 dollars!!

  1. the horse will miss its buddies but if u give it lots of attention 4 the first week it will be no problem, and the horse will love cal weather. montana doesnt get cold==it gets miserable. as for transport, post a note at your clossest stock yard. lots of animals r shipped in & out of montana, with 1 horse you can usually make a deal with someone who has the room for a very reasonable fee, depends on how good  a negotiater u r

  2. You'd have to contact either a shipper in Montana or where you live, because prices will vary.

She won't get depressed. Horses can form bonds with other horses, but unless there is a horse that she is so attached to that she can't let it out of her sight or whatever, she'd probably be fine. I mean, they're going to sell her anyway so she'll be leaving them anyway.

The first winter will be harder on her because she'll grow a unnecessarily big winter coat, because coat growth isn't triggered by a horse's body temperature, but their "memory" (in quotes because it's not so much a memory in that since) of the previous winter. You might have to clip her if her coat gets too big that she's uncomfortable.

  3. she looks like a great mare im sure she could adjust well to the heat.as for transporting i would say put an ad on ur local craglist and maybe you can find somebody that would do it for a lot cheaper then a regular company well good luck hope you get your mare.

  4. i am from Montana! Billings! But i have no idea about horses...just though id let you know.

  6. wow you too look very happy together, my horse mickey came form indiana and he ajusted just fine he likes our weher better the horse is a good price but are you sure that you really want her she isnt very young so thats why they are selling her cheep it would cost around athousand to transport her more or less depending on the compony

    good luck!

  7. I could not tell you how much it would be....but with gas prices sky high I would imagine it would be alot.

Who you really need to ask this question is your parents and see if they are totally ok with this...and maybe they can actually give you a price.

I have really no clue I have always transported my horses myself....and it is'nt cheap.

    Good luck with this.

  8. i'm not sure about transportation other than it will be expensive, but her adjusting to california should be easy for her. she might be sad for a few days or not be sad at all. horses in general adapt well when leaving a herd and joining another.

  9. i don't know how much it would cost

but i think she willbfintolv her riends, as long as u have other horses too

i think she could adjust to the weather as long asfor the first while u do not ride her to hard, hope i helped

  10. Hello,

    My input!

We lived in Southern California my whole life, until last year!  So I know where you are coming from with shipping (importing) horses from out of state!

We have 11 horses and all of them but 2 I bought out of state!  We had them shipped from Montana, Washington, Wyoming, Minnesota, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, etc....  SHIPPING is more expensive right now, due to the fuel prices!  But, you should be able to figure out shipping by this formula.

You need to get the mileage, just search it on Yahoo maps, and it will give you the mileage too....  Then figure about .75 to .90 a mile....for the shipping.

You can find shippers on UShip.com doing transports that way too, to get a better idea.  JUST check the feedback scores on there if you use that site.

While it takes about 7-14 days for the horses to adjust to a new setting, the mare at least already knows you!  That is more than I can say about the horses I had shipped.  YES, they adapt fine to the weather change!  DON'T worry about that too....

REMEMBER it is a buyers market out there for horses now!  YOU should be able to pick her up for LESS!!!!!  Especially since she is 15!

SO, yes she will adjust fine to the weather change...  And YES, she will miss her friends, but they get over it quickly....  So if you can afford the shipping into the cost, go for it!

  11. Uh Oh....you leave Hap to go on vacation and you fall in love with another horse!?  I thought it was true love with Hap!!

Well, she looks like a very nice mare, and if it is in the budget to do it, then go for it!!  She'll miss her buddies but she has a new buddy waiting for her.  I wonder how Hap will feel about his new sister?

Just remember...it is a buyers market..so negotiate.  And, whatever you decide to do, best of luck!!

As far as adapting to the climate...I'm sure she will be fine but, you'll probably have to body clip her because she will get wolly bully waiting for the snow!!

Very nice picture by the lake..hope you had a nice vacation!!
