Question:

So we have a "right" to Government provided health care?

Then logically it's safe to assume that we have a "right" to government provided food (can't live or be healthy without food), Housing (can't be healthy without a roof over our heads) and transportation (have to be able to get to the Health Care Provider) right ?

  1. You're totally right - it's absurd to think the govt should be providing everyone with healthcare.  This is a slippery slope.

    To Jenster: Ted Kennedy just said all Americans have a right to healthcare last night in his speech.  Many Dems feel this way.

According to Democrats we do.  I'm fine with providing a safety net for kids (real kids, not 18 year old "kids") and those in true need, but I'll be damned if I'm going to support someone who could actually qualify and pay for healthcare insurance like I do, but doesn't because they're too lazy or would rather spend their money on things like cigarettes and cell phones.

Yes, Food Stamps exists as does public housing and shelters and there even exists (gasp) public transportation.  In fact, medical care is provided, however, indigent care is more costly than simply making sure everyone has insurance.  A single-payer system would be most cost-effective and certainly save money.  As you will note, a single payer system is a "business model" approach.

  10. Health care is a service, it is provided for by working people, it is a business.  It can't be a right.  All rights are free, they are concepts, freedom of speech has no dollar value, it is invaluable.  So does freedom of (or even from) religion.

    Some might say the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness demands free health care.  They also might say the government is responsible for promoting the general welfare.  Well I say health care is available in the US.  So are guns.  We have a right to health care, and a right to bear arms, but is anyone suggesting that our right to bear arms requires the government to provide us with one?  I think not.

  13. The US has programs for all of these things right now - Food Stamps, Welfare, Medicaid, etc.

    I don't think anyone says that Americans have a 'right' to national healthcare.  Moreso, they think that it is a program that would benefit us in the longterm and give necessary health benefits to everyone.

    Though, in my opinion, it should be a 'right' for all veterans, even though that is not the case right now.

No, there is no right to that.  We have the right to pursue an education, in order to pursue a job, to provide healthcare for ourselves.  There is no right to "free" food, housing, transportation, etc.  Look up the definition of "parasite" in the Dictionary, and the definition will fit these people perfectly.  If you are so lazy and stupid that you cannot provide for yourself, I don't want to provide for you.  Let these bleeding heart people donate to charities to help these worthless leeches, and shee how much they actually care when they have a choice whether or not to "help"

    promote the general Welfare - do you see how it says PROMOTE, not ensure? Promoting the General welfare would be providing the basis for people to succeed - such as education.  It doesn't say "make sure wothless people get 'free' stuff".  We promote the General welfare by having roads, schools, etc.  You want to give out general welfare.

We have a right to adequate health care, food, and housing.  No one says it must be government provided.  No one says we have a right to transportation, but the economy moves on the ability to transport goods and people efficiently.  So it only makes sense to use collective resources to create and maintain the infrastructure that makes smooth, efficient, safe transport possible.

    So what is it you are asking?

  19. Yep. Seems the government has a responsibility to provide for all our wants and needs and we have a right to demand that they do just that. I think you've pretty much nailed it.

    But given the fact that the only money that the government has to exercise this extraordinary responsibility comes from folks like me, it seems I don't have the right to keep what I earn. Seems I have a responsibility to turn it over to the government so that they can give it to someone else who didn't or wouldn't.
