Question:

So were Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters the greatest examples of the type?

(i.e. cutters that ferried pilots to ships entering harbours in any and all weather).

Or were there vessels from somewhere else that were better (faster, safer, more reliable)? If there was I haven't heard of them.

  2. They are definitely considered a classic design and have been duplicated for people who want to sail around the world in small boats. They can take a beating and still plod along. Yes I would say the greatest example of this type.

    But there are modern designs which might now be considered more efficient in that they are a bit more nimble, able to get away from problems in a serious situation.

  3. The BC cutters were a fine boat. Other pilot boats were designed for the area that they worked in. Because of the different conditions they had designs that were unique to their area of use. IE rough atlantic, calmer pacific waters and even inland waters. To compare all pilot boats would be comparing apples to oranges.
