So what's a stupid housefly's purpose, and can we live without these stupid pest?

I got the same problem. Just that the fruit flies had a personality disorder and come out of the soil of my potted plants. I used hairspray and bbq lighter to whipe them out with moderate but awesome looking results, i used my heavy vacuum to make them disappear with better results, and i finally bought a bug killer safe for plants and started spraying away.

But they are still around, no matter how many i kill.

Flies are not stupid, neither are they smart.  Only people can be that.  And pest is define by each person.  What is a pest to you may not be a pest to someone else.

Flies have been on Earth a lot longer that humans.  That alone gives them precedence over humans.  Yes, you can live without the common house fly.  But, you better get used to flies.  After all, there will be flies on Earth, well after humanity has lost it's purpose.

Flies lay eggs on roadkill and poo so their larva can clean it up. Imagine if dead animals never disappeared.  Davage you don't have Fruit flies unless you are using fruit for fertilizer. You have Fungus gnats that live on and breed in organic particles in your soil.

Their purpose is to provide food for migratory birds in the arctic and antarctic regions in the summer.  Unfortunately, predators cannot hunt the prey species to extinction, or they will starve.  So a good supply of them is left to torment us humans.

Every creature no matter how small has a purpose. Insect world is the most misunderstood and the most undervalued of all the animals.

We are still understanding & learning from them. Everyday a new species of insect is discovered.

Flies are yet to be fully understood. Scientists are still discovering new facts about them and they are all ready using their maggots for treating incurable wounds.

So in the environment there might be more that they do apart from being a nuisance and a health hazard.

The most common beneficial things that they do are -

Food for other animals not just other insects but birds and small mammals as well.

Help in pollination.

They help in keeping the environment clean by using the dead flesh as a food and a breeding ground.
